I would not have stayed in Sao Luis if I had had the choice.
I would not have stayed in Sao Luis if I had had the choice. We stayed one nights in the historic center on arrival. Absolutely beautiful place but very uncomfortable hotels and few places for tourists. A 1h walking visit is probably enough. We stayed another night on the way back from a trek into Lencois national park on the beachfront. More confortable but nothing really interesting for foreign tourists. There is potential to develop this city into something attractive for tourists but it’s not yet enough to justify a stay.Guest review byGregSpain - 6.0

Barreirinhas improved since 2022, however the city is really ugly. High season everything was overpriced. You do get whatever you need, but will pay top dollars for poor quality stuff. Food was ok, everywhere but very expensive. taxis were super priced . And the city is not a walkable city. Dirty and service, for such a touristic area is very poor. Santo Amaro is gorgeous and my favorite place in Lençois Maranhenses. Plan on 3 days to visit ponta Verde, Emendadas, and Circuito Betânia and Lagoa do Junco. We stayed 1 night. Purpose was to see the National Park, Lencois Maranhenses. We were advised to go to Atins or Santo Amaro instead of staying all the time in Barreirinhas as they are nicer and I would second that. Santo Amaro is the best option to stay when visiting the Lençóis Maranhenses. You can walk to the entrance of the National Park and up the first few dunes to watch the sunset without having to pay for any tours. However, there are amazing options for full and half-day tours to various lakes among the dunes. A tiny town with very few dine-out options but there is a very nice restaurant in town (Cajueiro) and a few homemade food places that are very affordable. We stayed for 4 days and it was just the exact time needed to go out on 5 tours and truly enjoy the dunes, lakes, sunsets, and night sky. It is a very quiet place.
It is a very quiet place. During the week days there is nothing to do but going to restaurants. There are many of stray dogs and cats, they are homeless and have no food. The tours are all the same.
The tours are all the same. They drive like maniacs on bumpy roads. It is not fun for everyone and especially unnerving and tiring you have already spent half of day trekking, or then to have a very uncomfortable ride is tiresome and infantile. It should not be imposed on all visitors. That’s what are quads for and other extreme forms of transportation on sand. Also no one spoke a word of English. More guides should be trained and companies should offer visitors a choice of joining a group where the guide speaks some English. All of this on the top of a very tiresome bumpy ride from the airport. I feel like my body was shaken to the bones in the last 24 hours. And for what? We spent 3 nights and 4 days in Santo Amaro visiting the dunes. It was by far a better jumping off point than Atins or Barreirinhas BUT the other two are a bit more attractive with somewhat more to do.
