Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Shower was a bit cramped for my 6ft 3 husband
The owners were lovely and very helpful. It was in a great position. We didn’t need to use a car at all. Room was a good size.

Pillows could have been a bit softer (but that's being really picky!)
Perfectly located for visiting the city, just a short walk away. Hosts were amazing and couldn't be more helpful. Breakfast was really tasty and well worth the money. Will definitely return here next time I visit York.

The shower pressure was very low and there was a little traffic noise but it definitely wouldn't deter me from staying again.
Really lovely guest house. Very very welcoming, personable & friendly staff. The room was absolutely spotless and extremely comfortable. Very easy walk into the centre (about 10 mins) with fantastic food choices from all over the world. Would definitely return.

The Barbican House is well located and included a parking space and is easy to access. The host, Durga, was very friendly, helpful, welcoming, and provided any information we needed. The guest house was immaculately clean throughout and we opted for the breakfast which was fantastic, We would highly recommend the Barbican House.

Large bright room in lovely old building. Really comfortable bed, everything we needed. The staff were exceptional, really welcoming and helpful. The breakfast was great. The location was perfect bring only 3 minutes walk from the Barbican and 15 minutes into town. Plus off street parking. We will definitely book again

Close to York city centre Lovely friendly owners who were very accommodating. Clean & comfortable. It was incredibly hot in our room despite a fan being provided (which we had on all night.) Maybe air conditioning might be a good idea especially as our summers are getting hotter.

Location was great, just by York City walls and brisk 10 minute walk into the City. We parked the car up and walked all 3 days we were there. The owner was lovely, very welcoming and helpful. Breakfast great, nice quiet guest house in an ideal spot for us. Room was a good size and the bathroom spotless. Nothing to fault, our stay was great and we would stay there again.

Durga is an excellent host who is very proud of his establishment and very welcoming to his guests. He is a former Ghurka and very proud of his heritage. The B & B is impeccable and very clean and he provides a good breakfast. Durga ensures that he knows all the guest names and is very attentive.
