Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

AustraliaNeeded to go down to the lobby to get hot water as there were no kettles in our room. The room was still somewhat cold even with heating on but we had electric blankets so it wasn't a big deal. Lighting in our room was a little dim.
Spacious. Walking distance from Nikko Station and from shrines and temples. Room was clean. Staff were polite and respectful.

United States of AmericaSuited me fine, no complaints. My son didn’t like the pillow and thought the walls were thin (But liked the tea offering in the lobby). Proprietor listened to Lionel Hampton, I prefer Coltrane. Big wup.
Period piece. Nice fixtures. Vintage oddities. Nice western mattress in Japanese setting (mats, screens, etc). And a sweet nook for chair table setting in room. Massage chair in hall a dream after long hike to the falls. Real character on a budget

PhilippinesEvery review talks about the rude old man, he was okay, just maybe one of those who dont like to talk much or doesnt speak english. What I really didnt like was that they wanted to have us leave the room key (which I was uncomfortable with, and the old lady who speaks english, even went after us to the lobby to get the key from us) Turns out that they were going to give us new towels. Still it should have bee our prerogative to leave the key or not with the reception. Also the door to the toilet keeps on hitting the wash basin, it is placed in a weird angle that you have to maneuver yourself to get into the toilet. There is no water kettle in the room. Would have been nice to be able to have coffee on cold mornings.
I read a lot of reviews here so my expectations were very low. However, I have to say the location is wornderful, very near the station and the bus stop. Likewise, just a few meters away is a family mart. The room was big but not very well lighted, they have a big light in the middle of the room but the rest have inadequate lighting. The reception area have a lobby/lounge where you can heat up food and eat from 4?5pm onwards.

AustraliaI read through other reviews before booking, so had lower expectations of the accommodation. I have nothing else to add....
The hotel is in a convenient location minutes away from the train and bus stops to go sightseeing . Convenience store across the street, and a supermarket within 10 mins walk. Surrounded by cafes and eateries. I knew it was an old building, so was not surprised by the retro style. I was provided a spacious, even by western standards, and clean room (room 401). Comfy beds and pillows but some other people may prefer softer pillows. Enjoyed the tea, coffee and microwave facilities in the common dining area by the hotel reception. Lovely background music in the dining area during the evenings. Attentive staff members are patient with me and helpful despite my language barrier. Overall, it suited my needs for a spacious room as a base to explore Nikko for my family trip.

JapanThis property advertised Western breakfast included, but upon arrival I was told there were no meals available. One particular staff member was not at all helpful, and borderline rude, even though I spoke to him in polite and fluent Japanese.
Very clean, and closely located to the station.

JapanThe staff wasn’t polite nor amicable at all. I speak Japanese fluently, so there was nothing lost in translation here, since I’ve been living in Japan for almost 15 years and I’m a freelance translator and interpreter. So much for omotenashi, huh? It was a first for me, truly. What a shame. The pillows were really bad.
Great location for sightseeing in Nikko and its surroundings, since it’s pretty close to Tobu Station and the bus stops nearby. Besides, there are plenty of restaurants and shops in the area. If you don’t mind the bad manners of the staff and it being a bit old, it’s the perfect place for simply taking a shower and getting some sleep.

New ZealandI'm usually skeptical when I read reviews from other people who talk about the host being rude or unpleasant but in this case those who submitted earlier reviews referring to the 'grumpy old man' were spot on. He really is a grump old man. I suspect he just doesn't like having non-Japanese guests or at least guests who don't speak Japanese. I only know a few words so he made it as difficult as possible for me at checkin, and that included pretended he didn't even know what I was talking about when I resorted to just using the word "English?" when all else failed. It was a totally unpleasant experience whlich detracted entirely from our stay. I let me wife deal with the front desk for the remainder of our stay.
Room was one of the largest we had during our 5 week trip to Japan. Lovely little alcove with Japanese decorations. A sliding Japanese style wall on one side revealed a room where we could sit. Tatami mats. Comfortable beds. All in all, a lovely room.

New ZealandBeds were not beds in european meaning, they were elavated foutons, so very hard. No option forhot drinks in the morning if breakfast isn't purchased. Windows cannot be opened, they a locked. Just shampoo in the bayhroom, no conditioner or body wash.
The location is very convenient, just near the JR station. Price. As it's quite old hotel, it was interesting to see how hotels were used to be.

United Arab EmiratesYou need to look past the stairwell and the age of the property, it has seen better days. But that could be said about everything in Nikko. Even in a top chain hotel in Himeji I saw the same issues of damp, pealing wallpaper, etc so maybe it’s a climate thing and the hit to tourism. The hotel does need modernising but at the end of the day: it’s clean, I felt safe and the dear old couple looked after us.
The room was the biggest of our entire trip, with even a sitting area, Japanese low dining table and more wardrobe space than I have at home. Breakfast was delicious and cooked fresh every morning by the sweetest old lady! She saw how much my daughter enjoyed her omelette the first day so made another the next day- while the lady beside us had a big plate of sandwiches (which she couldn’t finish so took for her day out). The dining room was old fashioned and felt part living room. I felt safe as a female travelling with her children. If you’re on a budget, there was plenty of items free to use to prepare your own meals and tea/coffee available in the dining room. We enjoyed ramen next door which thankfully is open until 8pm- everything in Nikko seems to shut after lunch. There’s a convenience store across the road and a bus stop out front if you don’t want to walk to the sights.

FranceYou could smell cigarette smoke in the corridors, the personnel could be friendlier.
The hotel is just fine. It's old, yes, the man at the front desk is a bit grumpy, yes, (could also be his lack of English) but the rooms are rather spacious, have everything you need and the hotel is the cheapest option in Nikko. And I personally liked the old 70s charm.
