No window screens and no air conditioner so it made the room stuffy. No closet or coat rack to hang anything!

The location was great. The staff was awesome. The Hotel was very interesting and beautiful for how old it is.

I understand the building is historic but they could use some upgrades and restoration. This did not deter us from enjoying our stay.

The location of the hotel could not have been better. We loved the historic building and being able to walk to the beach, downtown, everywhere!

We were on the main street and the walls and windows were so thin we were up most of the night with the noise and had to leave abruptly at 7am because of the noise and light entering the room. I could even hear my neighbor on his phone having a convo 😕

Beautiful property good closet and furnishings. Clean bathroom

Because it’s a historic building, there were steps and stairs. Interesting configurations. The historic king room we had was TINY!

The location was the best! 7 minute walk to the wharf. Paved walking path to Cannery Row and the Aquarium. Many choices for food and coffee. Convenient and afforadable parking!

Although it was great value, our room wasn’t the biggest, plus it didn’t have a wardrobe or anywhere to hang any coats, jackets or any clothes, only one hook on the bathroom door. My wife spoke to the reception about this and was told we had only booked a standard King room, from a voice in the office!! The face to face staff told us to come back in the morning and they would try and sort it. We didn’t go back as we were out early and all of the next day and didn’t get back until late. We were only there 2 nights but I would have thought a wardrobe would be a basic requirement in any hotel room, standard or not.

It was a nice historic hotel within walking distance to most of the attractions. Complimentary coffee and tea which were available in the morning was a nice touch. The hot tub was a nice surprise too. Good value for money too.

Tiny room, bathroom and counterspace so small that it wasn't functional. Shower and controls old and beaten up. No water pressure, no bath fan. Those little rooms are very confining. I don't mind the traditional decor but the size is just too small.

The only thing that disappointed me was disappointing due to the lack of soundproofing.

I had an incredible stay at the Monterey Hotel! From the moment I arrived, the staff was welcoming and attentive, ensuring that every need was met. The location was perfect—close to major attractions yet peaceful enough for a relaxing getaway. Near the hotel across the road, there is a wonderful cafe where you can have amazing crepes for breakfast. They were absolutely amazing! The texture was perfect—thin, soft, and slightly crispy around the edges. The fillings were fresh, flavorful, and generous. I went with the classic Nutella and banana option, and it was heavenly. My son ordered a savory crepe with cheese which was just as delicious. You can tell they use high-quality ingredients, and everything is made with care.

The wifi alternated between good and bad during our five day stay, so it wasn't possible to work in the room. On the flip side, there were plenty of restaurants and cafés close by that offered free wifi. The water pressure in the bathroom sink was as bad as the water pressure in the shower was good. The bed was ok at best. If you suffer from sore backs I'd probably buy one of the newer more expensive rooms. The third floor of the hotel had some slightly shabby areas: discolored carpets and unpainted repair-work on the ceiling dome in the open atrium. The only working elevator went up to the "new" part of the hotel. To reach the historic part you had to walk out between the two buildings and up several stairs, so if you're in a wheel chair or have a hard time with stairs you'd best book in the newer part.

Probably the best priced hotel near central Monterey and the Monterey conference center. The complimentary breakfast (breakfast bar+fruit+american coffee) is enough to get you by but you'll want a proper early lunch. My colleague and I had two very different "historic" King Rooms: mine was larger with a huge beautiful window towards Alvarado street, while his had a window towards a building wall. Service was very good and prompt in their actions. Water pressure in the shower was good. Room was clean. The décor in the historic part of the hotel showed a lot of old grandness, like the stairs up to the second floor.

A few things were a bit of a disappointment. First, things were a bit rundown. I completely understand in a historic building you forgo modern aesthetic for historic charm. That said, carpets in the hallways that are buckled and a tripping hazard or exposed industrial staples holding them in place is not a great look. In addition the shower with old, rusted shower knobs, a rotting wood shutter, mismatched hardware and chipping paint are all elements that greatly diminish the overall aesthetic. The bed frame screws were 1/2 way out of the wall, and the old shoddy extension cord that I had to dig around for under the bed wouldn't hold tight my phone charger. The wall light switch didn’t work so as we arrived after dark we were fumbling around to turn on the bedside lamps. I would also recommend that you upgrade the towels. They are really cheap and scratchy. Like what I would expect at Motel 6. We were also put off by the fact that the lobby area always smelled of cigarette smoke every time we came through. Also, in regards to the lobby area it felt very unsafe that the back door was left open the whole time. Anyone could have walked in off the street unseen by desk staff and made their way around the hotel. That was rather unnerving. It’s a beautiful old building, it just could do with some upkeep to justify the rate.

The history charm and close proximity to restaurants and attractions.
