cyashitsu ryokan asakusa

Taito, Tokyo

Attractively located in the centre of Tokyo, cyashitsu ryokan asakusa features air-conditioned rooms, a bar, free WiFi and a shared lounge. Boasting a terrace, this property is situated a short distance from Asakusa Fujiasama Shrine, Nitenmon Gate and Edo Taito Traditional Crafts Center. The accommodation offers a concierge service and luggage storage space for guests. All three of us loved everything about this stay. Hana and Yoko were amazing hosts. They multitasked and manage all of the guests with such grace. At times the breakfast/bar/lobby was full of travelers coming or going or enjoying some tea. Hana took care of everything from ordering taxi’s and giving directions and taking pictures, always acknowledging everyone as they entered no matter what she might have been busy with at the time. The room was cozy and beautiful. The design and decor were amazing. So well done and soothing. My husband, daughter and I had a three person room with a gorgeous private bathroom. We utilized the soak tub upstairs that was included in our room price. So lovely! We were outside in the tub, but protected by walls and a garden with the moon shining through the roof. There is also a view of the SkyTower which we’d been up a few days before. We included breakfast with our stay and we are so glad we did. It was Japanese style and so perfect and nourishing on our cold January morning. It was New Year’s Day so we were also treated to special delicacies eaten for the holiday. Delicious. We are so happy this is the ryokan we picked. Stay here for a wonderful experience. Hana and Yoko will take wonderful care of you. Also a great location. :)

Family Inn Saiko 2 stars

Toshima, Tokyo

After a day of exploring the city, guests can relax in rooms that feature tatami (woven-straw) flooring with traditional futon bedding and Japanese-style sleepwear (Yukata robes), while all rooms are equipped with a private shower and toilet. Lots of local restaurants to try if you're tired of conbinis and fast food chains. Fairly quiet neighborhood if you're looking to get away from the crowds. Room I had has ample space for one person, not sure about others. Overall comfortable and relaxing.

Ryokan Asakusa Shigetsu 3 stars

Taito, Tokyo

Situated in the Asakusa area, Ryokan Asakusa Shigetsu has a history of 80 years. The accommodation boasts a view of the Tokyo Skytree from its Hinoki wood bath, a colorful breakfast and rice cooked in a rice cooking cauldron. The staff was wonderful! They were extremely accommodating and friendly. They took my luggage before check-in time, and helped me contact another ryokan to request transport. Communication was easy as the three staff members I interacted with all spoke English well. The public bath was small, but very tastefully set up. The temperature was just right. Likewise, the room was small, and I would rather use the term ‘cozy’ because it was also beautiful in its simplicity. The heating was efficient, the futon thick, and I slept like a log. I did not expect the location to be so perfect either. It was right next to Sensoji Temple and only a few minutes from Asakusa station. Lots of food options as well as souvenir shopping.

Tokyo inn Sakura An 3 stars

Sumida Ward, Tokyo

The units come with air conditioning, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a microwave, a kettle, a bidet, a hairdryer and a desk. With a private bathroom equipped with a shower and free toiletries, rooms at the ryokan also have free WiFi. Guest rooms feature a wardrobe. This was our first ryokan experience. For those of us and our children who grew up with the Japanese anime character Doraemon (or 小叮当 to some of us), the room was carefully curated with toys, comics, and even a singing toaster of our childhood superhero. All of us took turn sleeping in the “Doraemon cupboard” and enjoyed it. We were overwhelmed by the kindness and absolutely fabulous hospitality of our host Saito-san. All of us were pleasantly surprised by a fridge full of goodies which Saito-san offered us for free together with the free use of 2 bicycles. Certainly a most unique and fun experience of a lifetime.
