My second visit in 10 years; tiny tatami rooms in a modern ryokan with plenty of character. Quiet residential street, not too much city noise. Japanese or western breakfasts prepared to order. The futon beds are relatively thick and comfy. It's nice to book the bath after a long day out. Location north of Ueno and close to the Senso-ji area is OK, but count on longer journeys to Shibuya/Shinjuku (and the H line is overcrowded during rush hours, don't even think about bringing luggage).

For westerners like us, this was a chance to experience a traditional Japanese inn. The tatami mat and futon bedding was a fun experience. Despite the hard bedding we woke with less aches and pains than usual. (The only problem was getting up off the floor.) The bathroom was small but adequate and the deep bath was very relaxing. The staff were very helpful despite their limited English. (Much better than our Japanese.) The location was an easy walk to subway and local sightseeing attractions.

Very detail oriented ryokan. I got a welcome tea, was mugicha, so I was like: wow it is a ryokan after all. The room was small, but with tatami. They provided yukata for free, which is great. All was convenient, service wisely designed.

Beautiful Ryokan with spacisous rooms and welcoming staff. Green tea and yukata in the room, delicious breakfast and cozy onsen made our stay very enjoyable.

Not really a ryokan, it's more a guesthouse (tatami in every room). Nice experience to live here, owner very kind, futon very comfortable, coffee and tee for free. Position quite good, you need to walk 15 min to Ueno and just 5 min to Nezu.

This hotel is a ryokan, so with traditional bedroom and futon. This was exactly what we were looking for, so that was perfect. Moreover, the bedroom was huge with 2 rooms + separated (traditional) bathtub/shower and water closet. Bonus, it has an 'onsen' (traditional japanese baths) at the last floor with outdoor bathtub. Great souvenir! Good location also, close to Akihabara neighborhood or Ueno park.

Spotlessly clean, genuine ryokan feel with tatami mat/yukata/futon/green tea, great value for money! Great location close to Gotanda station on the yamanote line.

Andon is a great guesthouse that brings the traditional ryokan up to date with modern twist and creative cool feel - lots of art and objects around give it a nice personal touch. traditional tatami and futon are comfortable and the rooms are cosy (expect low lighting and the traditional compact Japanese rooms!). You can reserve the private jacuzzi on the fourth floor which is beautiful and well worth it after a long day sightseeing.
