First of all, shake the idea that you're in Matsue. That may be what it says on the address card, but the experience is completely different. You're sandwiched between the mountains and the sea, and the city is far away. You're in a quiet, private little slice of rural Japan where the sunrise breaks silently over the wharf and the black kites steal the castoffs from the fishermen on the rocks. If you're very lucky, and very still, you may hear an osprey hunting for its breakfast before the larger boats rumble to life. The old man who waits for you in reception greets you with warmth and enthusiasm, and what strength time has stolen from his hands has not yet abandoned his smile, which betrays the pleasure and pride at the history he sustains in this small Inn which is older than my country. Wake early, and travel just a few minutes along the coast to the small lighthouse where you can sit in silence and admire distant Mount Daisen, a prominent silhouette even from across the Sea of Japan.

Unexpectedly and without us asking the owner was waiting for us at the station and gave us a ride and remembered us from our stay of many years ago. View from the room is a nice Japanese garden and pond filled with koi.

My first 10 rating. Our room was fantastic, with a large sitting area, separate sleeping area with comfortable beds and private outdoor onsen. Staff were uniformly friendly, helpful and polite. Our meals were excellent and very filling. Each large window in our room looked out on different areas of an impeccably designed garden. We are already planning our next visit.

Shokinkan is a truly magical place operated by incredible people. Nestled in a gorgeous, ancient temple complex, the grounds are extremely fun to hike/explore during the day, with plenty of opportunities to learn about the history of the place through thoughtful signage and the wonderful staff. The food was absolutely delicious - we were eating a feast of unique foods specially prepared for us every evening and morning, which made the experience epic. Okami-san and everyone else here gregariously welcomed us with cups of beautiful matcha, and even shuttled us to and from Yasugi station and to the Adachi Museum of Art. I will never forget this place!

The breakfast was really good and the employees were kind. The small onsen was also geat-- it was clean. If you stay for more that 3 days you can get a free performance of a traditional Shimane instrument. The location is about 20 minutes away from Tamatsukuri onsen station but it's near a cafe and other restaurants.

Top to bottom, I’m traveling 16 days, so far best ever. Old style Japanese Life music to so many choice , fancy dinner, great Onsen to its view. But one day to make other day to female , you can have even you stay a day, either morning or night It worth it every penny. Stay there two days. I did one but already scheduled other town, if you do , please try two days
