The 13th-century Cathedral of Chartres is the city’s main landmark and a famous site of Christian pilgrimage. Featuring 18th-century stained-glass windows and a stunning façade with bas-relief sculptures and stone statues, this UNESCO World Heritage is one of the most important Gothic cathedrals in France.
On the back side of the Cathedral, travellers will find a Grass Labyrinth, date back to around 1200. According to the tradition, pilgrims used to go to the centre of the labyrinth in order to receive the grace of God.
The Massacre Bridge is one of the bridges crossing the Eure River, which flows right to the heart of the old part of the city. Chartres has also beautiful churches like the St. Aignan and the St. Martin-au-Val.

Chartres is a very popular and interesting town however some places are vastly more busy. The Cathédrale Notre Dame was swamped with tourist groups most of the time we attempted to visit before at the fifth attempt did we feel it was calm enough to enter. St Pierre Church is a far more calm and peaceful place to visit. It is also further from the town centre but the walk there is interesting.
There are plentiful bistros and cafés etc and a wide range of shops plus a covered food market on a Saturday morning.
Everything of interest is within a walkable distance including the remarkable La Maison Picassiette.
The Brassiere « Le Weekend » 3, rue Du Cheval Blanc is excellent for cuisine traditionnelle française and very reasonably priced, Le Phare Saint Louis at 4 rue Maréchal de Lattre du Tassigny for delicious crêpes plus
thé Chocolaté Café for great hot chocolat and patisserie - the tarte tatin was fantastic; again all at a great price.

No cars in the center. Quite place. A lot to discover.
No cars in the center. Quite place. A lot to discover. Church, museum glass, walking along the river Eure, the market.
If you want to visit by little train in the evening the illuminated spots, make a reservation in the tourist office. The service there was zero!

A very calm city with a lot of historic buildings.
A very calm city with a lot of historic buildings. Focus is naturally put on the gothic Cathedral, which really is worth a longer visit. No doubt about that.
The city of Chartres itself is less amazing. There are few but some very good spots to have lunch or dinner. The old center of the city offers a lot of shopping spots. Careful: on Sundays, most of the businesses are closed!
Not only the city seems old, but most of the visitors are. It's not like a university or business city where there is more to offer for youngsters.
The city sure has its charms, but a one-day trip is by far enough time to explore most of the interesting spots.

The cathedral is not to be missed.
The cathedral is not to be missed. Even if you're not big on churches or old buildings you will be impressed by the truly amazing cleaning and restoration work that has been done over the last two years or so and is still going on. The immediate surroundings include many attractive old buildings and several cafés and restaurants.

Central Chartres is a mix of old and new with many historical buildings and of course the amazing cathedral. Lots of lovely local restaurants ranging from brasseries to Greek/Turkish family cooking and people are very friendly. Loved walking along the river to get different perspectives of the cathedral

Whilst the amazing Cathedral of Chartres must be its main draw, the city centre itself is well worth a visit, being a mass of mediaeval lanes and alleys fully of lovely old buildings as well as lots of shops and eateries. The river Eure also flows through the city and a walk along it is recommended.
One further piece of entertainment not to miss are the various light shows projected every night onto various walls, bridges and churches as well as the cathedral. Extraordinary does not do the show justice.
Overall a great place to visit for a weekend - 2 days (and nights) would probably be enough.
The property is in a back-end street, which takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the street and town.
All the basic needs are met for us. The beds were incredibly good!
We had a cat in the area who came to visit us in the morning and evening.
I was in contact with the host(s) and they were immensely helpful.
The city people are extremely helpful and friendly unlike some towns in France.
On Tuesday night we did the walk around the labyrinth of the Cathedral (bare foot), which is a once in a lifetime feeling (pun intended).
A central location, with parking facilities and easy access to the centre of Chartres and the Cathedral. The hotel was modern and well appointed. We eat out both nights -too early in the season for the hotel restaurant starts June 1st. But breakfast was extremely good catering for both European and UK tastes! A good Brasserie next door...ideal for 'people watching' The main city bus station and the railway station are both in the immediate vicinity as well, making this an ideal location for all forms of travel
Fantastic location right opposite the Cathedral of Chartres. Le Parvis is an original old building with cellars dating back to 1100, and floors dating to 13OO and 1400. Some lovely features and the interior blends well with the building. We had a spacious room which was comfortable and very clean. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was excellent and our host, Sofie, was an absolute delight and could not do enough for us. Selection of further bars and restaurants on the same square and just off the square.
The location was better than expected. Our room was located just below the bell tower which made it ideal for sitting by the open window to people watch. We were also just a few steps away from an evening light show on the facade of the Chartres Cathedral that detailed the entire history of the church and it's beginnings. It was fantastic!!!
What made our stay even better were our hosts. They were quick to respond to my messages and the breakfast was very generous! Highly recommend this location.
We had a great stay at Au Did de Champs. It's such a peaceful and quiet location less than 30 minutes from the cathedral of Chartres. Sylvie was a great host and a great chef as well (we took her up on the dinner option). The room, reception area and entire property are extremely well maintained. I recommend staying here 100 per cent and we would definitely stay again.
The setting was beautiful. Large sliding doors on two sides with a view to gardens. The room was well equipped with beverages, fridge, kettle etc. The unit was modern and spotless and the best shower we had in our two weeks in France. There were more than enough high quality linens. The host was very helpful with suggestions on restaurants and other useful information.
Clean room, beds, bathroom. Good location for breaking up the journey between South France and Calais and vice versa Easy, reliable late check-in machine. Great coffee machine at breakfast! Friendly staff. Good value compared with competitors in the same price range. Comfy beds and working Aircon this time in this room (last week there was an issue).
The facility was extremely well located, in easy walking distance to the cathedral, and into the older parts of Chartres.
We were warmly received by the manager who helped us to our apartment and showed us around. The apartment itself was delightful, airy, with a view of the gardens.
This is a great hotel to use as a stop over on our way back to the UK. It's clean and really comfortable. I always get a really good sleep when I stay here. The rooms are quiet, you can't hear other people and the beds are comfortable.
The staff, especially Thomas, was great. The hotel is clean and updated. Breakfast was perfect. Close to city and parking for both hotel and visit to Cathedral were easy. Enjoyed dinner at Cafe Bleu. Good stop right off motor way.
Everything at Ibis Styles in Chartres was perfect. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. The room at the top of the hotel was very quite. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast were very good.
I really loved the location (in front of the cathedral) and the style of the hotel. The staff was friendly and easygoing, the restaurant and bar a nice addition.
The bed in the room was soft and comfortable
I like everything about this place, which is located in a very charming area of Chartres. It is very quiet and easy access to the center of Chartres. Elise is very helpful.
Great stop over location on way down to the south of France with very clean comfortable rooms and friendly staff. The breakfast was excellent and good value for money.
