According to legend, the city was founded around the year 1184 BC by the Athenian King Menestheus, just after the Trojan War. Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs occupied this area, as the reminders of the Phoenician settlement of ‘Doña Blanca’ show. Centuries later, commerce with the Americas brought new life and wealth to the city.
Perfumed by orange tree blossoms, the Old Town is adorned with Baroque architecture and cobblestone streets. A small town with plenty of history, particularly of the Sherry trade (Osborne in particular). Small enough to walk around comfortably, though there seemed to be no shortage of taxis. Uncrowded (late April). Many good restaurants and bars. Very convenient for travel to Cadiz and Jerez.

This was a great clean hotel, with a really comfortable and spacious room. The minibar was a nice addition, and not excessively priced, though admittedly very limited options. We came to the town from Cadiz. There is no comparison. The town is busy but not trendy as claimed in all the media. You can find a good restaurant or two if you do the legwork. The harbour is not on the sea but on the river. We didn't think it worthwhile to try the beach. We will can't see what all the fuss is about and will stick to Cadiz in future

The room had a shower in the bath which is useful for families with small children. They serve breakfast in the morning. Check In and check out are at good times. The room has a TV and WiFi. The hotel gave us a key to get back into the hotel so we don't get locked out if we return late to the hotel. There is free street parking directly outside the hotel.

Staff were helpful and efficient. Our room was clean and simple. We had a decent meal in the restaurant. The location is in a kind of suburb, several km from Cadiz, about 20 minutes drive. Our dog was welcome, not always the case in Spain, and there is a large wild area opposite for walks.

With the market next door and cafes right beneath - an excellent combination. El Puerto de Santa Maria is a wonderful town full of fantastic "palacios" from 17- 18th century. For this hotel I recommend to make sure that you stay in the room that has windows facing the street and not the internal patio, it is really worth paying a bit extra.

The apartment contains everything which a traveler could need: hairdryer, iron, towels and there was a washing machine, which I found great. There were a bottle of water, tea and sugar. The apartment was very clean and had a cute balcony. I am very satisfied and recommend this apartment.
