The Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary offers a selection of outdoor activities just a short distance from Prague. Within the city, you’ll find 13 hot springs, notable for their 14th century collonaded exteriors, where you can bathe and refresh yourself in their restorative waters. Afterwards, head to the Diana Observation Deck via a funicular train to admire picturesque views of the city and embark on hiking trails through forestry that has remained unchanged for centuries.
Much of the city’s architecture was built by wealthy Czechoslovakians during the 18th century and now lines the famous Teplá River. Elsewhere, hillside villas showcase neo Baroque and Renaissance-style architecture with the best being found at the Hotel Imperial or on the streets of Krále Jiřího. Here, you’ll be able to see the Russian orthodox church of Saint Peter and Paul, as well as the Chateau Tower in the city’s Old Town.
Karlovy Vary is home to some of the Czech Republic’s most unique food delicacies. Across the city’s restaurants and at the Jan Becher Museum, you’ll be able to sample and learn more about Becherovka – an after-dinner herbal liquor dating back 150 years. Additionally, the Karlovy Wafer, popularised by peckish spa-goers is another snack worth trying, now available in a selection of delicious flavours. After sampling local delicacies, head to the Postal Court Restaurant in the Old Town, to enjoy Czech staples and pilsner in an authentic setting.

Very cute little town - scenic with beautiful buildings.

Very cute little town - scenic with beautiful buildings. We only stayed one night and would loved to have been there longer to really explore. We ate at one of the beer brewery restuarants around the corner from our accommodation and the food was delicious.

I expected it to be my dream place for enjoying a spa experience, and at the end there was nothing available of that sort, maybe only in the very expensive hotels. Mine was a decent hotel, but did not have pool, and there were two public places that were not appealing at all. The town was nice, but most places close very early. I ate a decent meal at the popular Check restaurant in town(had to try at least once), nothing amazing, just ok.

Classic (Habsburg Empire times) architecture's town-museum, unique in that sense. The old town is framed by mountains and forests, on the mountain river. Hot and warm springs are all around town. One can feel like his on a filming site, but everything is real. Excellent beer, good food, competitive prices, and hotel prices are absolute value for money. On the negative side, the town has a heavy Soviet times legacy, mostly in its specialization in attracting tourists from Russia. As a result, the Soviet Russian culture is dominating everywhere - from adverts, small and large - in Russian as the main foreign language around the town, to hotel and restaurant staff, always speaking Russian, in some cases -German, and far less often - English. I know that the town authorities tried to switch the main tourist origin from Russians to Germans of Russian origin after the start of Russian aggression on Ukraine. They partially succeeded, but unfortunately, it didn't change the atmosphere in a beautiful town much. You can still see Russian as the dominating language around with tons of loudly speaking, hardly talking people, some with bad manners, dominating in town. Probably, those with nostalgia for Soviet times, or who speak only Russian, will feel more comfortable here than in any other town in the EU, though.

Came for the Karlovy Vary half marathon, on a complete random pick. Was pleasantly surprised by this magical destination. If we had more times, there is great hiking to explore and fancy hotels like the Pupp to dress up and have dinner or afternoon tea.
It's a must go place.

It's a must go place. I like it so much I just wish I had more time to stay, three days are not enough. There is so many places to see and go, that a week would be maybe OK. If you go, try Císarské lázne. Visit takes about one hour with all the talking and its very interesting.
Karlovy Vary is definitely worth a trip.
January 17, 2025
Karlovy Vary is definitely worth a trip. You need to know though that the city is build along the sides of a valley - the river flows through it, and the houses and streets are then steep. If you want to go from one side to the other by car, you are likely to do a round-trip, even if the direct direction would be just opposite of you. BE aware that entering these colonnades is NOT allowed with your dog (if you travel with one). The water from the hot springs is drinkable (you will see MANY tourists going around with these typical flat cups where you drink from the handle), but it certainly is an aquired taste (hot, iron-taste, slightly salty, no sulfur though). The city is best explored by foot and firm foot-wear as you are in for some hiking up and down the many stairs or steep streets that are there. Famous things to buy are jewelry, sweets, and porcellan or crystal. BE aware though that the real deal (bohemian garnet) is very often falsivied! Ideally, you get a piece from a seller with reputation, AND a certificate!
