Passau is a city that lies where three rivers meet – the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz – in Germany’s Lower Bavaria region, near the Austrian border. Renowned as the ‘City of Three Rivers’, this picturesque city has a rich trade history and is filled with many monuments that stand in homage to its prestigious links to the Holy Roman Empire.
Passau is home to a range of stunning historical landmarks. Overlooking the city is Veste Oberhaus, a 13th-century hilltop fortress that once served as a stronghold of the Bishop of Passau. In the old town below, you’ll discover a gorgeous mix of Baroque architecture, including St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Various cathedrals have stood here since the 8th century, though the current one dates to the 17th-century and is home to one of the largest church organs in the world with over 17,000 pipes.
There are plenty of adventurous activities to do outdoors in Passau. A cruise along the Danube river is a great way to take in the sights of the city from the water, and offers plenty of holiday photography moments. The Danube Cycle Path between Passau and Vienna is renowned for its lush riverside and valley views too, and is a great way to get the adrenaline pumping.

Not as great as advertised.
August 6, 2025
Not as great as advertised. The old city center is quite nice. The views of the rivers are nice too. Worth a day trip if you're in the neighborhood. Parking situation sucks. There are parking garages that actually close from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. We got up at 4 a.m. to get on the road early to beat the traffic when we noticed the garage being closed. It's the first time it ever happened to us. No way to get in and anywhere near your car. It was 10.30€ for a day. It was the Parkhaus Wöhrl. By the way you can't pay by debit card and you should have the right amount of money with you. If you put in 50€ you don't get any change back! WTF?! If you want to be able to access your car 24/7 you have to find a garage that doesn't close for the night. There is one for currently 35€ a day. There are parking lots as well but I can't say how safe it is to park your car overnight...

We particularly loved the Dom and the midday organ concert. Sorry to have missed the Obervasten, but it was soooo hot when we were there that we opted for the Passauer Erlebnisbad (PEB) instead. An easy bus ride from the bus station and what a swimming pool complex!

In Passau, one can walk just about everywhere, but I'd take a taxi from the train station to your hotel. We loved Sello's cafe near St. Paul's church and The Ratskeller near the town hall. It was fun to look at the river cruise ships parked right along the village docks. Don't miss the hike to the old castle across the river as there is a spectacular view of the town from there.

Beautiful historic city (center) at the confluence of three rivers with a rich history. Be sure to take a boat ride or visit the Veste Oberhaus fortress. There is a beautiful view of the city from the Mariahilf monastery.

Since moving to Germany I make a point of visiting Passau for one or two nights most years. I never tire of what Passau has to offer and as an 'older' lady travelling alone I've never had problems with security, the train station is very close to modern shops and not far from the picturesque old town and the river.
