About Paris

Including tips for the best time to visit Paris

As the birthplace of the Enlightenment and a trailblazer in the fashion world, Paris has cemented itself as one of the world's must-see cities. In a country known for exceptional food, style, and art, the capital delivers on all three counts.

The city is split into 20 districts ("arrondissements"), each with its own distinct vibe. Le Marais (in the 4th arrondissement) is famous for its narrow, medieval streets full of traditional bakeries and chic boutiques. The area is also home to the iconic cathedral of Notre-Dame, one of the best examples of French Gothic architecture.

The 7th arrondissement is home to some of the city's most famous landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, Les Invalides, and Musée d'Orsay. Neighboring districts have plenty to offer, too, like the iconic Champs-Elysées, Arc de Triomphe, and Opéra Garnier. In the center of Paris, you'll find the world-famous Musée du Louvre, featuring tens of thousands of classic artworks including da Vinci's "Mona Lisa." Right outside the city are the mysterious Catacombs and the Château de Versailles.

Paris, like every French city, takes pride in its cuisine and offers some of the world's best food. You'll find everything from 3-Michelin-star spots like Restaurant Guy Savoy to laid-back bistros like La Mascotte.

Promising fun for all ages, Disneyland Paris is in the eastern suburb Marne-la-Vallée, just a quick train ride from the center.

Beautiful city.

May 6, 2024

Beautiful city. I would advise going out of season when there is less tourist, but the weather will be worse. Metro is dirty, and could be a bit less complicated for foreigners to use, but google maps will explain it most of the time. Some parts of the city are dirty and unsafe.

I liked seeing the Orsay, Marmottan, Rodin, Picasso and Louvre Museums. Sainte Chapelle took my breath away! Sacre Coeur is very beautiful, especially the mosaics. The view of the city from Montmartre is amazing. Interesting to see the restoration in progress of Notre Dame. Enjoyed the delicious food and street performers. There's beautiful architecture in all directions. And, the Eiffel Tower is a must!

We didn't have long to be in Paris because our focus was Versailles and Normandy. Our hotel was a 75 meters from the Seine, 3 blocks for Notre Dame, and 2 blocks from Shakespeare Bookstore. Also, 2 blocks from the station to catch the train to the airport. We took the Toot Bus around and got off at various places such as the Arc de Triumph and Eifel Tower. We took the boat ride down the Seine and spent a couple of hours walking beside the river and sitting to snack and watch the people walking by. Delightful time that was too short.

Great city for walking and jogging.

May 4, 2024

Great city for walking and jogging. I ran along the Seine and through the Tuileries early every day and it was lovely. The Pompidou Centre is worth a visit, whatever is showing, and there's a good ice cream parlour straight opposite. It's a tourist thing to do, but I'd recommend an open top bus trip. If you're lucky the traffic will snarl up round Place de Concorde and you can spend a happy half hour watching the gendarmerie trying to sort it out!

What has changed over the years is that you can communicate in English almost everywhere. People are friendly and helpful. You can’t order dessert and cafe only at the restaurant, there need to be a food order first. Book the entrance tickets to the most popular places online in advance and be aware of waiting in queues.

May 3, 2024

Rue Montorgueil runs north to south towards to the Seine, between 2nd and 1st Arrondisement, and is the perfect location for shopping, cafes, patisseries, and close to Le Marais, Notre Dame, Louvre, Pompidou Centre. The metro is great, quick and easy to get around. Buy a Paris visite pass for 3 or 5 days. Most things are in the first zone. A very walkable, stylish city, full of life!
