The Croatian city of Šibenik is blessed with not one but two nearby natural wonders – the Kornati Islands to the west and Krka National Park to the north. The city is considered a gateway to both sites, but there's plenty to enjoy in town as well, if you dedicate the time – namely, a UNESCO-listed cathedral and a handful of fortresses dating back to the Middle Ages that once protected the city.
Šibenik's medieval centre is the city's greatest draw, a well-preserved enclave of 15th- and 16th-century buildings including the Cathedral of St James. This UNESCO World Heritage Site took more than a century to finish, which explains its mix of Gothic and Renaissance stone architecture. Look out for the external frieze, which depicts over 70 faces of 15th-century locals, and ornate interior baptistry. Šibenik Town Hall is another Renaissance-era highlight, featuring arches, columns and a building-length balcony overlooking the city's central square.
Šibenik's position on the Adriatic made it a prime target for invaders. Today, you'll still find a handful of strongholds that protected its borders. St John's Fortress – the city's highest – dates back to 1646 and sits on a hill overlooking town. St Michael's Fortress, which also sits on a hill, features an open-air stage that hosts summer concerts.
Above all, Šibenik is known for its proximity to both the Kornati Islands and Krka National Park. Escape to the latter for a nature-filled day among canyons, lakes and spectacular waterfalls linked by bridges and footpaths.

Sibenik ending up being one of the surprise highlights of our trip! The Old Town is quaint and beautiful. It did not feel touristy and yet felt welcoming to tourists. There were plenty of restuarants with a variety of choices. We visited the end of June as the annual International Children's festival was winding up and the town was decorated with streamers with hanging flags of children's drawing--so charming! We loved that it was within a reasonable distance to Split and only 15-20 minutes to Krka National Park.
Lovely town but expensive

We liked most the smaller places we visited on our trip: Sibenik and Rovinj. Our two favorite towns. They both had the feel of the medieval towns that they are; easy to enjoy because fewer tourists than in other parts of Croatia. Great seafood; great pizza. Friendly and helpful people.
The cathedral in Sibenik is a marvel.

The cathedral in Sibenik is a marvel. It is the only cathedral in all of Europe that was built entirely of stone. The town is situated on a beautiful bay with boat access to the Krka Waterfalls. The town itself is charming. It was a welcome refuge after crowded Dubrovnik. It was wonderful to be among Croatians instead of just tourists. If you want to visit a Croatian seaside city without crowds and without great expense, this is the town for you.
The town is nice and well-kept.

The town is nice and well-kept. The town, white for the choice of tuff and marble, is literally dazzling on sunny days. People are kind. Prices are slightly high, especially if you think about the cost of a simple bottle of water, which can reach up to 4 euros. However, it is worth a visit. The whole area is beautiful, especially the islands that are in front of the city, as well as the fortress of San Nicola.

Sibenik is a great place to stay for the town & sights there, but also as a springboard to get to Split/Dubrovnik Kkra National Park & local towns. The Sibenik card was a good idea in theory, but we found some sights (The cathedral) could not process the QR code that we were issued with. The bus station also could not issue the 3 day bus pass & we had to go to the Tourist Information office where the very helpful guy phoned the supervisor of the bus station. We then had to return to the bus station to collect our 3 day bus pass. The old town is full of interesting history, the museum a real gem too. Despite going to Sibenik mid October, there were still hoards of tours from the cruise ships, making the visit to the cathedral very difficult. Not great for vegetarians, with pasta/pizza available at many places. Definitely wouldn't be easy for vegans!
