Japan’s second most populous city, Yokohama, is located just a 45-minute train journey from the capital. As one of the nation’s prominent economic centres, the city mixes modern architecture and shopping with historical temples and picturesque waterfront scenery.
During your time in Yokohama, you’ll find its theme parks are just as present as its historical monuments. Minato Minara or Cosmo World, located in the former industrial district, offer exhilarating roller coasters, buzzing family-friendly restaurants, the Yokohama Museum of Art and Shinko Island. Alternatively, some of Yokohama’s best nature can be found at Yamashita Park or the botanical gardens of Sankei-en – the location of a 15th century Japanese pagoda.
As the home of Japan’s largest Chinatown, Yokohama is the best location to sample traditional Japanese dishes like Gyunabe, while many restaurants serve fresh sushi and tempura. For something a little more offbeat, head to the Noodle Cup Museum to design your own ramen cup or explore the Yokohama Ramen Museum to visit the world’s only food-themed amusement park.
Following the end of Japan’s isolationist policy in the 1800s, Yokohama was transformed from a small fishing village into the city we know today. Now, one of Japan’s largest administrative zones, the city's Kannai business district was formerly a moated island before its development in the 15th century. Today, western influence can be felt across Yokohama's music, fashion and art worlds, while the city was first recognised on a global scale after hosting the 2002 FIFA World Cup final.

Yokohama is a very international city, not like Tokyo (which is like other big cities) but historically speaking. The architecture and parks are awesome! I stayed for 4 days and saw everything I wanted to see by foot. It is so rich in variety! There's the Home of a diplomat with a beautiful garden and view of the bridge and city, Negishi Forest Park with a Sakura Forest, close-by are the Negishi Racetrack Grandstands. My highlight: Sankei-en, a beautifully arranged garden with teahouses, shrines, a pagoda, old residences, ponds, streams, forests, flowers and more. Another day I went to the harbour area and surrounding parks (Rinko park over Megami bridge further to the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse and lastly Yamashita Park). On my last day I went to Chinatown, Yokohama park and harbour view park (my other absolute favourite was the English garden there) and Motomachi Park which was great with its stairways surrounded by Sakura. Other visit-worthy parks: Odori-Park and Kamon-yama Park. What I always recommend is going by foot and not taking the car or public transport: you find hidden treasures like shrines, small parks, cozy shops and beautiful houses/plants.

Yokohama is 20 minutes from Tokyo on the train. It gave us breathing space from Tokyo. Superb & vast range of restaurants abound. Wonderful waterside walks. We felt extremely safe in Yokohama & loved the elevated walkways.

The dining options in the Minato Mirai area are vast and seemingly endless. For those on a date, I recommend walking along the waterfront at night and dining at the Red Brick Warehouses or in the Landmark Tower. For those with kid, the amusement park Cosmo World is an about 15-minute walk from Sakuragicho station.

The Ferris Wheel ride with view of Mt. Fuji and its illumination at night is an absolute MUST. The Christmas Market and food were fun. The harbor cruise is a delight. Motomachi is on everyone's list of shopping areas as are the nearby flower gardens and Yamashita Park. The staff at the hotel and in the shopping area are friendly and helpful. The tourist areas are not overpriced and offer discounts everywhere.

Lots of new development in the last 10 years. Lots of shops have appeared in the towers and between them along the water front. Connections within Yokohama to the mainline station always seem a little iffy - though walking is never a problem. The Port Museum and associated training ship are worth an hour. The waterfront area finally feels like it is finished and worth exploring. Plenty to eat and drink along the way. Generally it has to be the cleanest urban environment I have ever been in.

Yokohama is an amazing city to visit. There is so much to see and do, including a visit to the largest Chinatown in Japan, the Cup of Noodle museum, shopping malls, and a lot of different restaurants, including many that serve Hawaiian food.
