Villa Kapasa, hotel in Argyroupolis

Villa Kapasa is set in Mathés, 24 km from Archaeological Museum of Rethymno, and features a garden, a terrace and a restaurant.

Way up in the hills and so the views from the terrace and balcony are exceptional. We received such a warm welcome from the family and enjoyed chatting together. Breakfast was lovely - traditionally Greek with fresh juice, omelette, yogurt etc. The room was basic but comfortable, just the one night stay we were looking for.

Kanakis Blue Beach Apartments, hotel in Argyroupolis

Featuring a pool with a sun terrace overlooking the Cretan Sea, the sea-front Kanakis Blue Beach Apartments is located in Petres Village of Rethymno.

Lovely place, it is located just by the sea and has beautiful private beach. The owner and personel of that hotel are amazing. Language is not a barrier there as you will be well looked after by everybody who work there. Suberb breakfast which you can enjoy while looking at the sea. I really recommend that place.

Hydramis Palace Beach Resort, hotel in Argyroupolis

Hydramis Palace Beach Resort enjoys a beachfront location in Georgioupolis, and offers rooms with free Wi-Fi access. It includes a large pool, sports facilities and a fully equipped fitness centre.

Place was well maintained and clean. A small balcony facing the sea was great. Staff at reception and restaurant were friendly and helpful. The beach is just at the back though lot of pebbles for first 10-15 metres into the water. You got the bus stop for buses going to Chania, Rethimno and Heraklion at about 200m. The road to the bus stop from Hotel is like a service road ( public road ) but no lights.

Beautiful and quiet accomodation in an agricultural area, far away from mass tourism. Convenient location to explore many interesting places on the island with a rental car, thanks to the proximity to the national road. Very friendly and helpful owners. They live in a separate house on the same land. Their dog is absolutely kind, calm and quiet. Private parking possible right next to the accomodation or outside of the property on the roadside. For us, this was exactly what we were looking for and we had a great time. But be aware that living in such an accommodation means that you will see some insects outside and sometimes also inside the house. That comes with living close to the nature.

The town and restaurants are spread out over quite a large area so you need a car to see the place. We went in October so not winter in Crete but the place seemed closed up. You have to have accommodation in walkable distance from a restaurant, remembering that many roads have no lighting or pavements. I don't really recommend a night's stay in October, but it may be OK in July/August.

In early April the village was just waking up to tourists. Enough places to eat and drink in the upper village but the lower tavernas were deserted in the evenings (they seemed busier at lunchtime when we drove through on the way to Frangocastelo). The bakery, little museums and mosaic were closed but that did not take away from the charm of the place I think we came at just the right time. The place has not been taken over by tourism at all, but they are welcoming. There are many old villas still crumbling away, some renovated smartly (and rented out or second homes) and some just normal homes. We only stayed for 3 nights and wished it could have been 5.

Steep Hills but worthwhile walks to historical sights...

Steep Hills but worthwhile walks to historical sights covering over 2000 years of different civilations. The Roman mosaic a must. Spring water flows through and below the Village where Tavernas are terraced amongst waterfalls and aqueducts. See Sturgeon and Trout swimmimg in Tanks and dine on this local specialty. Worth a one or two day stopover.
