Since my last visit in 2010 the town has turned into some sort of tourist trap. Masses of day visitors seem to flood it in the afternoon and you have to leave the "Bazar" area to get some local food at a local level (of price and service).
Be prepared for the steep ascents - particularly on a wet day.

Everything about the town I liked.
Everything about the town I liked. Drove to Blue Eye, which was a pleasant hilly drive with views. Love old town and the history. I spent 2 nights and it was perfect length of stay. Not an easy town to walk in because it is hilly and cobblestone, but walking slow is not a problem! Need a map or a really good sense of direction to find things. Walked to Ali Pasha bridge viewpoint and then hiked down to the bridge.
The Albanian people are so kind, always smiling and ready to help.
The drive from Tirana airport to Gjirokaster was fairly easy. I followed google maps and had no wrong turns. 3 hour drive.

The town is beautiful and interesting for its fortified houses. Also is on UNESCO list. The old centre is very pleasant to walk around, it has an atmosphere. Car traffic was quite problematic, the roads between the houses are very narrow and very steep. Also, Google maps did not have good enough background and often led us somewhere where, for example, instead of a road was staircase. The old stone roads were very slippery in the rain ;-) Ono or two night is enought to stay here.

Albanian thoughts:
Albanian thoughts:
Spent a week here in April 2024 – so many positives …
Purely electronic passport gates at Tirana airport – an advantage if low on passport stamp space? Swift bus into town centre. Euros very widely accepted, 1:1 with the local Lek currency. Felt safe, met many great people and enjoyed a lot of raki; wine rather so-so, beer better … Trains are close to non-existent; negotiating the minibus service involves arriving and paying on the spot – found it straightforward; typical price: Tirana to Gjirokastra – 4 hours - £10 ..; saw stunning mountain scenery in last 2 hours, and when crossing the mountains from this town to Sarande port (1hr15, £3.30). Accommodation costs very favourable: enjoyed flats at £9 pppn. From Sarande, easy enough to catch a ferry or hydrofoil to Corfu, as a return airport – ca/ £20 single, 30-60 mins. Albaniatourguide proved a very useful online resource. Looking forward to next trip: apparently 12 degrees even in January …

Only had time to visit the castle.
Only had time to visit the castle. Spent several hours there. Would love to come back for the folk arts festival and visit some of the houses with the specific architecture that put this place on the UNESCO list.
.
Great location... amazing ambience... the location and the view are amazing... the hotel faces the gjirokaster castle /museum...remember this city was not built for cars so it will test ur driving skills if you are not used to the driving in hills or mountain terrains.. the rooms were very clean and had all the amenities...
The staff were extremely friendly... and polite...
Special thanks to "Matteo" at front desk... extremely professional... goes out of the way to make the guests comfortable...
The people who work at the hotel are very kind and accommodating and helped us with activities in Gjirokaster e.g. checking bus times to Tirana or contacting a horse riding agency. The room was very spacious and clean and the beds were large and comfortable. Would recommend staying here for a trip to Gjirokaster, especially if you are traveling by bus (5 min walk to the hotel from the bus station). There is also a small supermarket next to the hotel and a restaurant, so very convenient !
It was quite difficult to find a potential parking spot, but a restaurant owner a couple of streets away called the owner and they helped us parking our car and taking our suitcases. The hotel is situated on a beautiful location near the obelisk of Gjirokaster with spectacular views.
The room was very clean, spacious and within 30 seconds you are in the middle of the old city center. Staff was really friendly, breakfast was superb and overal we had a 10/10 experience at SS Kekezi.
The hotel owners was an older couple and they treated us like family! Upon arrival, we were given the grand tour and the Obelisk was only a few steps away. The room was a great size and everything was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was by far the best we had in Albania! The owner cooks everything and they take such good care of their guests! We loved everything about this four room hotel!! Definitely worth a stop just to have care and hospitality of the owners! Thank you!
The Hotel is perfectly situated in the heart of Gjirokaster. The historic city center is only a few steps away. The location of the hotel is simply stunning and allows an excellent view over Gjirokaster. The hotel-staff is extremely friendly and helped me even with a little problem with my car. Breakfast was excellent and was much more than a single person could eat. This was the best hotel I had during my week touring around Albania! Highly recommended!
Warm and welcoming host. She was always going out of her way to help us. She even offered us homemade wine and cake :). The location is perfect with walking distance to everything. The room was small but clean and comfortable with a great view of the castle and the city from the front balcony. The breakfast was served in the balcony and was excellent. Would highly recommend this place to anyone who is visiting Gjirokaster.
Could not recommend more! Greatest hostel experience in all of Albania -- the hosts were so welcoming, the free tour was fun and informative, the environment was friendly and social, and the advice we got for our time in Gjirokaster and beyond was incredible. The facilities were also very beautiful and clean, and there was an AC in our room for use at night. Would book again just for the breakfast spread (:
The hospitality was perfect, the staff was always friendly. we have been served by taxi for free, whenever we need to move. I have not used the car for a single day while I have been there. Free parking, excellent wifi. Very good traditional food and more variety. I will not honor this hotel, whenever I have the opportunity to go to Gjirokaster, I will stay here again. In a word, I was very pleased 🙏👌🌹
I loved my stay in the Hotel Kalemi, what a fantastic experience. great staff, delicious breakfast with lots of varieties. they served some soup and traditional pancakes early in the morning which was really impressive. the room and the bathroom was so warm in the cold weather. the hotel staff is super helpful with everything you might need. I will miss this beautiful city and this beautiful hotel.
Lovely little boutique hotel right in central Gjirokaster. We chose not to stay in the old town due to a need for parking, so it was a bit of a hike uphill to the old town, but it's a lovely walk for fit people. The hotel was quiet and very comfortable. Breakfast was served in a private room of their main restaurant/bar and it was delicious and plentiful!
I decided to stay an extra night to the beautiful city of Gjirokastër and booked this hotel last minute.
Surprisingly excellent, from check in to check out. Close to city center, location is unbeatable.
Rooms are very nice, modern and clean.
The views from the huge balcony were beautiful. Highly recommended.
Amazing! Belaj’s house was settled on (almost) the top of the mountain in Gjirokaster, right by the old town bazaar and the castle. It was stunning. Very clean room, a beautiful terrace (where they served a delicious breakfast) and two very lovely housekeepers. It was beautiful and perfect! Thank you!!
Everything was wonderful - the staff was amazing and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The view is really spectacular and made this our top places of where we stayed on our trip to Albania and Montenegro. Gjirokaster is just an amazing town and the people were super friendly.
The customer service was really good, the staff was very friendly and accommodating. They opened breakfast earlier for us to accommodate our schedules and also did not charge us for anything additional we got even though they were not included in the breakfast or hotel price.
This hotel is located above the city gjirokastër which is why it has a breathtaking view. Wait until you open up the windows in the morning and feel like you‘ve woken up in heaven, due to the heavy white fog surrounding this place, a very unique experience!
Such a clean and cozy hostel. It feels you are in a boutique hotel, not in a hostel!
Extremely kind and welcoming staff and great vibe in general.
Location is just perfect to enjoy Gjirokaster.
Lovely guest house on the top of the mountain overlooking Gjirokaster. Very nice and helpful owner, cooked us tasty Albanian dinner. Very good value for money. 10 out of 10. Definitely recommend.
The family that runs the hotel are super helpful and nice. The location of the hotel is perfect, next to the bazar and the castle. The breakfast was great, homemade and with traditional food.
Clean, modern, spacious, parking and good breakfast. Friendly people who work in the hotel. Near old town of gjirokaster. Around 6 to 7 min by car or 20 min walk. Its a fancy hotel.
Excellent hotel in Gjirokaster ! Our host and her family were super nice and prevenant. And the incredible breakfast on the terrace every morning is a bless.
