I did not know what to expect, really. We drove from Drake Bay to Savegre while it was raining a bit hard. Make sure you have a full gas tank. A 4x4 is a must. I am not sure how long it took us to get to the hotel. Probably 6 or 7 hours. It got dark and there is no lighting on the streets. It's a two way road, one lane each way. No light. Raining a bit hard (had to use the max mode of the wipers). I prayed every time someone came from the opposite way. Visibility was bad. It was all worth it. The hotel is very nice. There are many kinds of birds everywhere in the hotel flying free. We went to the Quetzal Tour. We saw 4 quetzales and other colorful birds. Two of the quetzales at the hotel. The restaurant and the food are superb. Great job. If you take one of the tours, ask about the history of the hotel. It's a heartwarming story.
Almost forgot. The property is huge. It also has some trails. One of them might be more than 3 or 4 miles. We saw beetles, different kinds of birds, a woodpecker killing a beetle right in front of us. Fungi of all kinds.
This place was just amazing. I'd stay there for at least 3 nights. And take your binoculars.
I don't know why it shows that I'm from the US. I'm from Mexico.

The hotel is located in heavily wooded area with a lot of birds and wildlife. My wife wanted to shoot a bird called Quetzal. She had read that this property had a few Quetzals in the woods nearby. They are shy birds so they are very hard to spot. The host did help my wife to find one bird high up in the tree. Earlier that day, my wife went with another guide to spot some Quetzals, so she had a few good pictures. There is a good restaurant within a short driving distance from the property. They serve good meals at reasonable prices.

Place it’s really great, clean, room is pretty. Such a great place to rest
This place is a bird-lover's paradise! And it's nice to feel cold sometimes in an otherwise warm, tropical country. Everyone is very nice, and very nature-oriented. The trees are all primary growth and fascinating and beautiful to see. This is one of my favorite places in Costa Rica (so far).

A magical valley, surrounded by an inimaginable amount of flora and fauna. Still a quiet place, with no massive tourism activity yet, greenery is what you will see the most. The Savegre river is astonishing, and its sound is like the perfect match to the landscape. If you are looking for a mountain/forest destination while you are here in Costa Rica, I will recommend San Gerardo de Dota.

The Quetzal valley has its own micro-climate, so its actually a lot colder and less humid than the rest of Costa Rica. You can walk everywhere, it's super safe and the river rushes near the street across some beautiful forest areas, there's no way you don't detox from city vibes in this place. The restaurants Lauraceas and Alma de Arbol are excellent, with super friendly waiters, modern menus and accesible prices. Los Lagos cabins have an awesome mountain view and are near the river, offer an excellent breakfast and are right in the centre of the valley. Bring appropriate clothing -preferably waterproof and with good hiking shoes so you get the most out of your stay regardless of the weather.

Birders paradise.
Birders paradise. This is the best place to see quetzal birds. 1 full day is enough. You must be here for a 5.30am quetzal birding tour if you want to see the quetzals. Cool- about 50° at night, 62-70° during the day.

San Gerardo de Dota has the perfect weather, it's also a very small community. Might need a bit more night life I suppose, but it's not a big deal.
Make sure you bring sunblock and warm clothes for the nights.

The hotel was more than we expected. We were in awe of the scenery. Magistic views that connect your inner with the world.
We were a family group of 10. Out of the three rooms we rented, the best was the #14 with an amazing deck and lovely mountain sight (and a great bathroom).
The staff was really nice and helpful.
Driving through the Panamerican Highway and going down San Gerardo de Dota is one of the best trips you can take in Costa Rica.
But overall, Rio Saavegre is a true star. It's a must.
The Hotel facilities are absolutely beautiful and the service was incredible. Greivin, the manager was super helpful upon check in and also guided us on a really cool Quetzal watching tour.
The hotel offers a really nice breakfast in a beautiful dining hall, and also the interior design of the common areas is tastefully selected. We enjoyed a nice round of Billiard while having coffee and beers, and enjoying the cozy fire next to us. The staff really helps make your stay as pleasant as possible.
During our three week trip to Costa Rica I'd say this place has by far the best value anywhere. Four star hotel for a two star price. The wifi was very fast, breakfast was good (difficult for a vegan though), restaurant was delicious but slightly higher in prices, and the staff is very helpful and most speak English. The access to trails was great for birding and botanizing. The room was exceptional, clean, large and beat our expectations.
Hotel Suria is in a great location, near the river. It has a beautiful dining room and gardens, nice rooms, and friendly, gracious staff.
We traveled from SJO in a private van to the valley with Adobe Tours, March 2023, for $182 US. I recommend you do the country a favor and not drive the mountains yourself, as roads are rough and CR has a wonderful system of shuttles and drivers.
Beautiful location, staff extremely nice, and great breakfast. We used the guide recommended by the hotel to see the quetzal.... a great moment... Furthermore, we went for the waterfall hike (a little scary but also a great moment for our trip). It's better to have a 4x4 to to come to the place because the village is a the end of a 10% slope for 8 kms (from 3070m altitude to 2300m)
The location is amazing, deep in a valley in San Gerardo de Dota, close to Los Quetzales National Park.
The unit looks like a converted container or trailer and is well equipped and comfortable.
Like others have mentioned, it does get cold at night. This was ok for us, but it was a huge (and welcome) contrast to the searing heat on the Osa Peninsula.
It's a lovely place with nice accommodations, a beautiful area with their own forrest, waterfall and pond on hotel's property. The pond could be seen from our room, and the sound of Savegre river lulled our sleep at night. Consider the temperature is considerably cooler than most of Costa Rica's destinations, so bring your raincoats and jackets.
Beautiful hotel with nice cottages around a little lake. Really proper, large and high rooms with a nice bathroom and really warm showers. Staff very nice and helpful, organized us a fantastic Quetzal Tour. tasty dinner and delicious breakfast.
Casa Monge is charming, we got to see a quetzal and walk along the river. Plus it’s close enough to Savegre Hotel, where we got to see the millennial oak tree in the oak trail. Anthony is really kind and a wonderful host.
Such a lovely experience in this quiet gem of a hotel. The staff was welcoming and the room clean and comfortable. They provided a delicious breakfast. I would come back in a heartbeat!
This place is a gem, the rooms are modern, big and very comfortable, the place is well located and the restaurant is exceptional. Please, make yourself a favor and choose this hotel!
Hotel facilities are amazing, personnel is great and location is the best in San Gerardo.
The food is also really good and fairly priced, the Apple pie is a MUST TRY for all.
Quaint little casita in San Gerardo de Dota. Simple room with only the necessities. Beautiful property. Delicious breakfast. Very friendly and helpful staff.
