Commonly known as just Freiburg, Freiburg im Breisgau is equally popular under a different name: the Jewel of the Black Forest. Located at the foot of the Schlossberg hill in the Baden region, the city is best known for its 15th-century university and local vineyards.
Popular for its high quality of living and serving as an entry point to the beautiful Black Forest, Freiburg is the sunniest and warmest city in Germany. The inner city is crossed by plenty of charming canals and if you happen to fall or step into one, the locals say you will marry a Freiburger, so be warned!
Don’t miss the stunning Münster cathedral with famous gargoyles and a tower with spectacular views. It’s built with the red sandstone popular in the area, similar to that used in the Gothic Historical Merchants Hall, also worth a visit.
Strolling down the city’s charming streets is a very pleasurable experience and you can stop in one of the many cosy cafés and little restaurants and enjoy a glass of the local wine or a pint of German beer.
Whether you fly to Euroairport Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg, or even nearby Zurich Airport, you have a wide choice of accommodation options available at Booking.com: from well-equipped hotels to comfortable apartments.

I stay here every month, and noticed that when booking a stay with Booking.com I'm given a very small room miles away from the lifts and with no working AC, so have to open window so very noisy...

A beautiful old town with excellent restaurants, shops,...
A beautiful old town with excellent restaurants, shops, bakeries and cosy bars. Small enough to walk around its cobble streets with quant little streams and easy to explore further with a very good public transport system and cycle lanes as is usual for Germany. The wooded hills that surround the town are a joy to walk in and offer great views. The stunning gothic cathedral tower of lattice stonework is well worth the many steps for the views. A picturesque tram and bus ride takes you to the Schauinslandbahn cable car to explore the black forest mountains around Feldberg. Hard to navigate the walks up there though as the maps and signs are confusing so easy to get lost without a phone. On a rainy day a great value museum day ticket gets you into all the museums for one price. One of the main old landmarks, the Martinstor gate tower is sadly ruined by the huge Mcdonalds sign on the side. Why was this allowed, like putting a coke cola sign on the Eifel tower.

Freiburg has so much history and a beautiful shopping district with a lot of restaurants very close to transportation. The food is amazing and it is so easy to get around in Freiburg. The people are so kind and very helpful. It is very important that you remember that all shops are closed on Sundays, with the exception of most restaurants. Be sure to have Euros on hand for this day, as a lot of places do not use credit cards. Check out City Park and get awesome views of the city from the tower, easily located by taking Landwasser to the fourth stop at Am Bischofskreuz. It's behind the Studentensiedlung am Seepark or the "Stussie," which is student housing for Freiburg. You have to try the tea and delights at the Turkish bakery, Sevgin. It is just a short walk from the main train station. You will not be disappointed.

very clean, modern, affordable hotel. the rooms are small and similar to cabins in ships. no cupboards in the room but a table to sit on and some well designed shelving on the walls. the staff was very helpful, the breakfast was very good.
the location was in a newly built area of Freiburg (Gueterbahnhof) but reached the tram to the center (4 min walking distance, drive about 5-10 min to centre). There is an underground parking lot in the same building but if this is full you should be able to park outside on the road.
Breakfast spread was great with the option of waffle grill and fresh fruits. Rooms were clean. Parking at the hotel is expensive at EUR15 per night. I think these should be built into the price of the rooms to avoid hassle. The hotel is 2.5kms away from Freiburg centrum/Bahn. The front desk is great and available 24x7. My 7 year old daughter woke up mid-night hungry and we walked down to the front desk/Bar, who were happy to make a Pizza for her at 1am. She was very happy :-)
The Check-in time specified was 3pm but we had reached Freiburg at 11:30am so our plan was to store our luggage at the hotel's luggage storage and head out to roam the city and then come back later in the evening for checking in. But when we reached the hotel at around 11:30am, they allowed us to check-in right away which was a pleasant surprise for us. The early check-in really helped us freshen up from the journey to Freiburg before heading out into the city.
The staff was very friendly and helpful, and they made me feel welcome and comfortable. The room was lovely, modern, and very clean. The bathroom was modern and well-equipped. The hotel also had a great location, next to a tram station and close to a super market and a mall. I think it was a great value for money, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Breisgau.
The hotel is in a Lovely historical building in 5 minutes walging distance of the city centre of freiburg, but the rooms could definitely use some upgrade, they lokken like there was nothing done in 20 years, the shower was broken, the floor was full of cracks the bed was not comfortabel, also the diner at the restaurant was very dissapointing. But the breakfast was ok
Staff great especially the Receptionist when we first arrived, very helpful and welcoming. Tram stop just over the road from the hotel and nearby are restaurants and a supermarket plus only 10 minutes into the centre of lovely Freiburg. Room comfy, clean - bed could have been more comfortable but didn’t realise it was a pull-down bed to make a sofa until the 3rd day!
The location is excellent. Short walks to most locations in the Altstadt. Access to the Schloßerg is a few hundred meters away. Breakfast was good. Every member of the staff was helpful, professional, and friendly. The hotel itself is simply elegant. If I return to Freiburg im Breisgau, I will stay again at Zum Roten Bären.
Complimentary (free) parking is available. The hotel benefits from its proximity to the tram station, facilitating convenient access to Freiburg's city center within approximately 15-20 minutes via tram line 4. The room provided has been recently updated. Additionally, the hotel staff are amicable and welcoming.
I booked a junior suite, as the price was comparable with other double hotel rooms in Freiburg on this date and I loved it! The room was really comfortable and the jacuzzi a real treat.
The staff were friendly and the location great. I would stay in the room again :)
Lovely apartment, location was fantastic and superb view of river . Really central position in the old town. Pedestrian area ,so very quiet , but perfect position to visit everything in Freiburg. Easy checkin via box.
The location in the Altstadt was enjoyable. The breakfast was very good. The hotel was very clean. It was "old and charming." We didn't get a room with a bathroom, but it was convenient to have a sink in the room.
Location was excellent. The room was very modern and comfortable but the hotel was still historically charming. Was perfect for exploring old town and the Christmas markets.
This hotel has a great view over Freiburg and beyond from every room. It is comfortable, private and quiet with lots of nature nearby. We enjoyed the pool and sauna facilities.
The breakfast was fantastic with many options and beautifully presented.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
We came by train to Freiburg so the location was perfect!
