The room was just big enough to walk around in without tripping over luggage. There was also a small desk. Young woman at the front desk was nice. Walkable from train station. You can walk downhill a short way and catch the tram if you’re too tired to walk to the port. I had a partial ocean view from my room.

Founded by the Phocaeans in 600 B.C., the long history of Marseille has produced an interesting and dynamic port-side city bursting with cultural diversity. Watch the fishermen sell their catch by auction at Vieux Harbor or cruise along the Corniche roads with views of the Calanques, dramatic rocky inlets to the sea.
The le Cours Julien and la Plaine areas provide a trendy hangout and every Thursday and Saturday morning, the Plaine market offers its various wares. This is the area to buy a novel from a hip bookshop or watch your kids on one of the playgrounds. There are also plentiful cafes to sip a cappuccino and watch the world go by.
If a culture packed vacation is on the agenda, the Musée d'Archéologie Méditerranéenne, Notre Dame de la Garde and Palais Longchamp won’t disappoint. The unique Unité d'Habitation, designed by famous architect Le Corbusier, contains everything from a shopping street to housing and has spectacular views of the terracotta landscape that makes Marseille so distinctive.

I visited Marseille after 20 years. It has changed a lot.
I visited Marseille after 20 years. It has changed a lot. It has become too expensive (when compared to other cities), yet it provides only a mediocre product in terms of visitability and culinary experiences. In June it is already quite hot. The restaurants along the front of the Vieux Port are to avoid at all costs - very expensive and the food is not fresh. On the other hand, Marseille can be a base from where to visit the other places in Provence.

I went there for a concert at the Vélodrome. Marseille is filthy and graffitied. Yet I had some excellent food and also visited cathedral. I wouldn’t go to Marseilles if didn’t have a specific reason.

Marseille as a city is a not a great tourist destination - the cathedrals are recent builds, the port is full of modern buildings interrupting the decaying ancient architecture - and there was a lot of graffiti everywhere. However, the parc national des calanques, which was right next door, was absolutely spectacular; and the blue mediterranean was so beautiful. I didn't go to the museums but colleagues who did said they were excellent.

An interesting historic city.
An interesting historic city. The old port, the Les Paniers district and the Pharo regions are full of fascinating history. Good transport links too, only a few hours from Paris on the train. The bus network is excellent.

A city of great contrasts.
A city of great contrasts. Beautiful, energetic, smelling of good food, for shopping, for walks. It also has its disadvantages if you move away from the port. You will see a different side of the city. Dirty, bad smelling and a bit dangerous. There are places where you can see that you are in France

I solo travelled and didn’t feel unsafe technically but felt uncomfortable there was always men staring or speaking in French towards me. Not somewhere I would recommend to female groups or female solo travellers. The majority of people also refuse to speak English even though it is a high tourist area. There isn’t much to do in the centre apart from the shopping centre port and a few sights. It is easy to get around you can walk to almost everything and there is a bus from the airport for €14 return which runs from the airport till 1:30am and back to the airport from 3:30am. Avoid going out at night or walking after dark. Ubers are also quite expensive I paid €13 for. 4 minute drive from my hostel to the bus station as it was dark so I didn’t feel safe walking. Le Panier is the best place in Marseille and I would really only recommend that
We were welcomed by Marc & able to check in early, which we had not expected. Room was lovely, had everything we needed. Best of all its location is less than 2 blocks from Vieux Port (the center of the action in Marseille!) and so many restaurants, shops and groceries nearby.
Added bonus was accommodation to our needing assistance with check out, since we had booked a 4 hour activity for our final morning, which would end at check out. (Thank you Marc & team!)
Highly recommend!
I chose the hotel mainly for the central location. I knew that I will be out also during the night and Marseille is not the safest place in France. Let's start with the positive things:
Staff was friendly, internet wifi was working well and the best thing was the breakfast. I was quite surprised that they even offered fresh pressed orange juice. The choice was really good for the level of the hotel!
We enjoyed our stay at Le Couvent in Marseille. It was conveniently located in Le Panier with easy access to Vieux Port, metro, and other parts of the city. The property is beautiful with comfortable beds and a large shower. There was a small kitchen for those who want to prepare meals. Be prepared to walk up some steps though as there is no elevator. I would stay here again.
The best thing in this hotel is location. It's 150m from Vieux Port, it's restaurants and bars. The building is old (as anything around it). The people running the place were helpful and nice to talk. In order to learn about Marseille or french way of life. The breakfast was a quality one in size and taste, compared to ones we wanted to experience also in Vieux Port cafes.
The studio was clean and comfortable, with everything we needed (kitchenette, large bathroom, comfortable bed) with bonus features: Bluetooth speakers and perfectly located in the middle of the Vieux Port. We were tourists for the day, but staying overnight here made us feel like we could partake in “local”.
Very centrally located next to Vieux Port of Marseille. Martin the owner went above & beyond in providing me with simple instructions with train lines and bus timetable for forward journey to Cassis. He greets you at the apartment which is a lovely touch as I didn’t arrive till 8pm after a long day
As always, ibis offers comfortable rooms. The hotel is located next to the Saint Charles train station which is really practical if you arrive to Marseille by train like us. Behind the hotel there are all the rentalcar companies if you need to rent a car (as we did).
The location could not have been better: in the heart of the Vieux Port, near the Tourist Office, supermarket, endless choice of cafes and restaurants. The apartment is very clean and has a well furnished kitchen. It was fresh despite of the heat outside.
Been here 7 years ago, due to the location which is 3 minutes of work from the Vieux port metro station, so with the same reason I am choosing this hotel again due to its location. The room is very good, and there are convenient store nearby.
Incredible location for this hotel
Our room with view on the Vieux Port was incredible
It is also with calm and all is very clean and with facilities ( for luggage, some cookies offered...)
The staff is very nice, helpful and with smile
We were initially given a room with 2 beds even though I had requested but the front desk quickly changed it when we asked. We have stayed here before because of the great location close to Vieux Port & the other tourist attractions
Room was comfortable and spacious, everything I needed. Temperature was just right which is a nice change as normally I find hotel rooms too warm.
Breakfast was great
Restaurant food tasty
Views on Vieux Port amazing
Location was perfect, only 2 blocks from the water in Vieux Port. Modern, comfortable and clean apartment. Access (door / access system) was easy to use and felt safe. Great value at price point.
Excellent value, excellent staff, excellent hotel, situated literally 3 minutes from Vieux Port.. staff very efficient and friendly., Hotel very clean. Perfect for visiting Marseille
Very good location in Vieux port, small hotel very helpful front desk. Nice bar with snacks after rugby match late at night. Metro right outside. Buses also
