First I met lovely people at the Book Aid shop that drew me in on the way to the castle. A woman there informed of the existence of some little known or advertised places of historical interest. The well known points of interest, the castle, the Bowes Museum, and the Butter Market—wryly referred to by local people as “the round thingy” in the middle of the high street—lived up to expectations. The charity thrift shops and the Witham, a cultural center cum shop on the High Street offered wonderful shopping. People working at the castle, the Bowes museum, and the food co-op were wonderfully helpful, The food and service at Blagraves in a remarkable building, parts of which date from the 15th century, were excellent.
The town is easy to get around. Almost everything to be seen and done is on three contiguous streets, Galgate, the High Street, and the road leading from the Butter Market, about a five-minute walk, to the Bowes Museum (I didn’t get its name). There’s a sign for the castle ruins hidden and sloping downhill behind the Methodist church at the corner of Galgate and High Street.
I was only disappointed to not be able to see the prayer labyrinth in the floor of St.Mary’s Anglican Church at the corner of High Street and the road to the museum. It was covered with chairs occupied by worshippers for a special service with performance by a huge childrens’ choir at the moment I looked in on a Friday afternoon and the seating was being kept in place for several services over that weekend of the third Sunday of Advent. It was a consolation to see such signs of spiritual life in that church, and, God willing, I’ll get to see the labyrinth at a quieter time.

We would love to stay again
The Hotel was easy to find and in an excellent location to visit Barnard Castle being only 10 minutes drive. EVERY member of staff was extremely helpful and friendly. It is a lovely historic building with some rooms showing signs of faded grandeur. However it was very comfortable and provided everything you could need for a short stay.
We stayed for 2 nights and ate in both the restaurant and in bar and the quality of food was excellent. We were a party of 3,all would highly recommend this Hotel and we shall certainly return.
The hosts (Glenda and Daniele) were wonderful and very kind. We had two rooms: two of us were in the garden room, which was absolutely wonderful. I stayed in the single person room (room 1) which was quite small, but equipped with every amenity and comfortable. Both rooms were on the garden and very quiet at night.
The breakfast was the best English breakfast I have ever had in many trips to the UK!
Parking on the street was free, and it is 10 minute walk to the town centre.
We visited Barnard Castle from US (Brooklyn NY) for a family wedding. We were not familiar with the area, but loved how the home is tucked away on a quiet street yet walking distance to center of town . Don't forget to look at the helpful binder and sit in the little garden. I really appreciated the treats on arrival as we had a very long train journey. The house is packed with charm and kept very clean. I only wish we could have stayed more than two nights.
We were looking for a stay near High Force and Barnard Castle so this was perfect! A really reasonable rate with hearty breakfast included. We received simple instructions of how to access our room and were very pleasantly surprised at the lovely room we had. So comfy. We had a shared bathroom but didn’t see another person during our stay. The staff were lovely and the locals friendly and helpful in the bar.
The breakfast was lovely and the lady who owned the property was very friendly and we would definitely return.
It was great being in the middle of the countryside.
We went to Barnard Castle which is a very nice town, the restaurant which was Italian called Capri, that was definitely worth a visit the price was amazing and we will be going back.
Breakfast and dinner were very good and well priced. The seafood linguini in particular was excellent. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very good; friendly and efficient staff were serving customers who were clearly enjoying themselves.
Parking was easy and the location of the hotel in the centre of Barnard Castle was convenient.
The location was excellent for Barnard Castle and parking was easy. Room was clean and tea and coffee facilities were laid on. The facilities were appropriate to the low price for a central location but a couple of adjustments would have made the stay better. The staff were friendly and polite.
The staff were so welcoming, knowledgeable and accommodating. They were not yet open for meals for the season yet but were still able to serve us a drink when we arrived. After trekking all day, this was a great treat. The room was clean and comfortable. The town is small and cute.
the location was excellent right in the centre of town amid all the shops and bars with easy access to the castle and river The property was well equipped clean and comfortable. The host communicated well and left some breakfast staples which were very welcome Very enjoyable stay.
Perfect location in the centre of Barnard Castle. All the equipment you could need for a self-catering getaway. Comfortable bed! Highly recommended. Plenty of nice places to eat within very easy walking distance, and close to the many attractions in the wider area.
The breakfast was wonderful, and Glenda and Daniele are doing a great job in being hospitable. Homelands is a lovely house, and the position in Barnard Castle is excellent. All the facilities were very good.
Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choices. The room was clean. The dinner was nice. The surrounding is peaceful and beautiful. The garden is charming. Very close to Barnard Castle.
central in Barnard Castle close to shops etc. Staff friendly and helpful. Room clean and comfortable and warm. plenty of tea, coffee and milk. Tasty breakfast and plenty of it.
The location as excellent - we walked into the town for some lunch. The snow made travelling difficult and our car was stuck at the property in the snow on friday.
