First I met lovely people at the Book Aid shop that drew me in on the way to the castle. A woman there informed of the existence of some little known or advertised places of historical interest. The well known points of interest, the castle, the Bowes Museum, and the Butter Market—wryly referred to by local people as “the round thingy” in the middle of the high street—lived up to expectations. The charity thrift shops and the Witham, a cultural center cum shop on the High Street offered wonderful shopping. People working at the castle, the Bowes museum, and the food co-op were wonderfully helpful, The food and service at Blagraves in a remarkable building, parts of which date from the 15th century, were excellent.
The town is easy to get around. Almost everything to be seen and done is on three contiguous streets, Galgate, the High Street, and the road leading from the Butter Market, about a five-minute walk, to the Bowes Museum (I didn’t get its name). There’s a sign for the castle ruins hidden and sloping downhill behind the Methodist church at the corner of Galgate and High Street.
I was only disappointed to not be able to see the prayer labyrinth in the floor of St.Mary’s Anglican Church at the corner of High Street and the road to the museum. It was covered with chairs occupied by worshippers for a special service with performance by a huge childrens’ choir at the moment I looked in on a Friday afternoon and the seating was being kept in place for several services over that weekend of the third Sunday of Advent. It was a consolation to see such signs of spiritual life in that church, and, God willing, I’ll get to see the labyrinth at a quieter time.

Lovely small town with lots to see and do in surrounding area
Pubs are good and a great choice for eating from breakfast to evening meal
Hecklers cottage was lovely where we stayed but house keeping appalling good job plenty places to eat out
Such a shame !!
We would love to stay again
The hosts (Glenda and Daniele) were wonderful and very kind. We had two rooms: two of us were in the garden room, which was absolutely wonderful. I stayed in the single person room (room 1) which was quite small, but equipped with every amenity and comfortable. Both rooms were on the garden and very quiet at night.
The breakfast was the best English breakfast I have ever had in many trips to the UK!
Parking on the street was free, and it is 10 minute walk to the town centre.
I enjoyed staying at Homelands while I was visiting Barnard Castle. The guesthouse is beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. My double en-suite room was exceptionally comfortable. The hosts were warm, welcoming and extremely helpful to get to know. Local, high quality ingredients were used in the excellent breakfast. Upon arrival, I was even greeted with homemade cake. All in all, my stay was excellent and I am looking forward to a return visit.
Breakfast and dinner were very good and well priced. The seafood linguini in particular was excellent. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very good; friendly and efficient staff were serving customers who were clearly enjoying themselves.
Parking was easy and the location of the hotel in the centre of Barnard Castle was convenient.
It was the little extras that made our stay so enjoyable: the homemade scones and jam, the homemade biscuits and fresh ground coffee and chocolates! Plenty of farm animals and wild visitors, the ducks, the hare and many pheasants.
Situated in very quiet countryside just off A66 and Barnard Castle.
The exterior and the main part of the hotel (the reception and dining area) are lovely and done out quite nicely. The breakfast was nice and the staff were helpful and attentive. For me the hotel was in a good location as I needed car parking too, but if you don't have a car it's a bit excluded.
We loved everything about this hotel. The staff were all so friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. The room was large, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent. Bar prices very reasonable. Lovely sunny beer garden. Great location with free parking.
excellent location for walks and sites. staying here and walking to barnard castle made our visit so much better than if we’d just stayed in the town. Good breakfast plenty of choice. nice clean room with powerful shower. overall look and feel of the hotel was nice.
Lovely apartment. Right in the center of Barnard castle. Very cozy. Lovely bathroom. Lovely touch from the proprietors on arrival. Milk bread biscuits and cereal. All your cleaning stuff if needed. Nothing wasn't thought off, we will definitely be back again
We loved our stay here! the cottage was spotlessly clean and so comfortable with the BEST shower! There was a generous welcome hamper which made our stay extra special. There is lots to do in the local area and the host was really friendly and welcoming.
large room with a bath, wasnt short of anything. nice staff, and breakfast was very good, perfect poached eggs, and the chef made sure we had everything and more. bar areas, one quiet and dogs allowed.
Just a 10 minute walk from the heart of the historic Barnard Castle, the Red Well Inn offers excellent homemade food, comfortable bed and breakfast, and an enjoyable and relaxing stay.

Lovely little place with everything you need. Fantastic location right in heart of Barnard Castle, yet still quiet and tucked away. Very clean, comfortable and well decorated.
Great location and our very first farm house stay. It could not have been better. The peace and quiet but always near the animals. We worth getting off the regular track.
Fantastically appointed apartment, very comfortable and cleverly laid out. It is a great place to explore Barnard Castle and the surrounding area from.
