Life By the Ocean Wave
From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.
Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.
At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.
Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.
Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

We come to Plymouth every year as often and frequently we can make it. There is always somewhere to go that is of interest, and most of all Plymouth Hoe, which is fantastic, and also a lovely town centre. I really enjoyed the trip to Plymonth. Nice city with a lot of restaurants, you can walk around or you can have a trip with ferry. Nice cathedral, nice parks, live music, concerts with popular rock bands or pop singers.

We wanted a quiet place to stay for our honeymoon and this hotel meet all we wanted and more. Great city.
Great city. Lots of history, merged with modern architecture and suited to all types of visitors. Beautiful scenery along the coast and a fantastic array of shopping, cafes, bars and restaurants. Art and culture glows all around the city centre. Concerts, exhibitions, theatre all thriving. Plymouth also felt very safe for a city. Choices of boat trips & the Aquarium . We used to live in North Cornwall, Plymouth was our nearest city, we still return to Plmouth as we will never tire of the Hoe & Barbarcan . The hotel is very friendly to dogs and it is very welcoming. When you first come in Nigel greets you and answers any questions about Plymouth that you would like to know and also hands out a map to you pointing out the best places where to visit.The most important part is that you are guaranteed parking space for a very little price. We are really enjoying.

Our room was clean, the food was delicious, and we even were made a little breakfast to-go as we had to check out super early to catch our bus. The location is perfect, as you literally walk up the street and are at the ocean or with a couple of steps in the city center! If I ever were to come back to Plymouth, I would stay here again, no doubt!
