One can get a little nostalgic when talking about the development of Hua Hin. The first beachside resort town in Thailand was originally a small fishing village. It manages to maintain a laid-back atmosphere despite chain hotels invading the best vantage points along Hua Hin Beach.
The current King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, spends much of his time here in the royal residence of Klai Kangwon Palace, built in 1927. The local Thai population have followed ever since as they escape the stifling heat of Bangkok.
Hin Lek Fai Hill provides the finest outlook of the bay and its 5 km-long stretch of beach. The central Hua Hin Night Market satisfies your wallet and your stomach with its mix of local souvenirs and freshly cooked seafood.
These days there is a distinctive cosmopolitan flair to the city with many restaurants and hotels purveying a European influence. It is also less hectic than Pattaya, the rival beach resort on the other side of the Bay of Thailand.

Cool night markets especially Tamarind Market, good activities can be done say the lovely ATV rides, Elephant walks in the jungle and an excellent base for taking trips from the harbour, had an awesome trip to Koh Samui. We selected to stay at the area called Nong Kae, not far from cicada and tamarind markets. This area is very quiet and has plenty of foods, convenient stores. We can walk along the beach and see the view from the hill nearby this area. Do recommend, try the ordinary train from Bangkok to nong kae station, after hop off the train you can walk to some branded hotel nearby.Guest review byaphiwat - 6.0

I thought it was a coastal town with a beach area. It is more a town stretched along the coast with lots of hi rise rental condos, and more local areas for residential and local businesses and two shopping malls. It's cheap and cheerful, and suitable for locals and travellers who like that location. Many beaches further north or south that I did not go to. 4 hospitals was impressive.
