Phillipolis is a little out of the way .

Phillipolis is a little out of the way . The roads are quite potholed, but they are working on it. It is a really dusty and rundown little town , but there are signs of renewal. People were friendly and welcoming and new guesthouses and eating places have opened. The town is safe to explore.

    Historic buildings, architecture. Friendly people.

Historic buildings, architecture. Friendly people. Many old towns in the Free State have fallen into complete decay (eg. Winburg, Zastron) but property owners in Philippolis clearly love their properties. Even though it's a way off the N1 the detour on the R717 is no longer than the main road ... you just have to drive carefully to avoid potholes. Going slower is good as you pass through stunning Free State Karoo landscapes.

Oldest establishment in the Free State.

Oldest establishment in the Free State. All activities/facilities are within walking distance from the centre of town. The Philippolis Hotel is definitely a stop for a traveller wanting to see how a building can be restored. Definitely check out the woodwork. The bar serves ice-cold beverages, even in load-shedding. Pitstop restaurant offers great meal options at reasonable prices. I can recommend the Lamb. The main access road to Philippolis has a few potholes, but the town residents continually repair the road to ensure good access. The roads in the town are in a reasonable state. Good option as a stopover en route to Gauteng from Cape Town
