Ostend has lots to discover, beach, marina and lovely squares. Great train station with easy links to places like Brugge, Ghent and Antwerp. Just be aware that if you go in October, there is a fun fair in every square that spoke the views.
The location was great for our purpose of touring the near by region and the beach is fine for long walks and building sandcastles. Visiting at the start of June the town seemed abandoned with a largely senior population.. my spouse and I left the kids at the apartment and went out to enjoy a nice adult evening . At 8:30 we could only find one restaurant open and all the dinners were finishing their sandwiches .Not the Dinner and sunset we had hoped for.
Ostend is really a mix of old and new. We loved spending time walking around. The beach is beautiful and clean, you can walk over to the beach where the seals are and the promenade is nice and long for walks. There is a lot of street/modern art so try to keep your eye on buildings and walls - you can see a lot. The old buildings can still be found and are mixed up with the new. A lot of the city is quite modern but you can find the old charm in it as well. We enjoyed the Winter themed park and square along with the Light Tunnel. However, we also enjoyed going through the docks and walking along the WW2 Batteries and dunes. Getting around on foot is easy and there is a ferry that can take you over to Fort Napoleon so if you are up for walking, you don't need public transportation or a car. We did come with a car and it was very useful to move around the coast to explore though.
It was my first time at Belgium coast. It was one of the best vacations ever. Interesting and nice option is to take tram that goes all the way the coast and do some sight seeing. When you have a children you can make a trip to fun park, and you can do it also by tram. The beaches are really wide and clean. Also there is a high number of nice restaurants.
Oostend was a very clean city, into recycling. The beaches were clean and plenty of shopping stores on the walkway. The people were very friendly and everything was accessible. The only drawback is the parking.
wonderful place to stay with kids, loads of bungalows to choose from within a short walk to the beach; kids love sandy beaches, driving carts on the promenade and eating wuffles; not crowded and really relaxing; Direct tram to Ostend from where it is easy to get to Brugge/Brussels/Antwerp and many other places if you fancy a day exploring Belgium
