Lovely place to visit. Few must things are cable car. View the city from air. Valley of the moon. If you get time. Witches market, the Cemetery. There is nice Indian resturant called Hawali. Authentic Indian food in La paz which was a surprise.
People are very friendly in La Paz. The Mi Teleferico is such an amazing local commuting transportation easing the traffic congestion for its residents. The system is so efficient and I found it a very unique experience with applause. The Mirador Killi Killi viewing point is just spectacular too. My friend and I even took the local bus at one point and all the local people are very warm .
We didnt have long in La Paz. We went on a walking tour on the first day, but didn't particularly enjoy it. I think we started too early and a lot of things were not fully open. The cable cars were great though. We enjoyed these more, and it gave us amazing views of the city. We really loved the Valley of the Moon also. We went to the women wrestling show, which was lots of fun. The death road cycle was a challenge, but it was an amazing trip.
We felt safe to walk during the day and night. Food, clothing and haircuts are cheap. Most people are helpful and very friendly. La Paz has a few world records: highest capital city (so ensure you have Diamox to reduce altitude sickness symptoms) and the largest cable car network in the world (well worth the 12 BOB for 2 hours use as we covered 6 different routes.
I recommend to visit cable cars, the city is safe. Prices are cheap, people friendly. La Paz itself is max 2 days, then you have seen everything in the city. The only thing that I did not like is the traffic.
I stayed with a friend in Ovejuyo, just a short walk from Valle de las Animas - it’s a tough hike but well worth it for the views across this expansive city! Salteñas Hornoto in Iglesia de San Miguel or Obrajes do the best salteñas, the trick is to suck out the stew so you don’t make a mess. Locals say that if you make a mess you must be a bad kisser - good luck!! Mirador Killi Killi is amazing as well and you can see right over to the start of the Andes on a good day. The witches market is such a vibe and full of artesanal crafts, as well as gorgeous Patagonia fleeces, oh and it’s well worth treating yourself to a piece of Bolivianita jewellery too, only found in the Bolivian Anahi mine so expect to pay between £20 - £60 for the real deal (there should be a clear and sharp contrast between the two colours). Be sure to buy an anticucho from one of the affectionately named caseritas (a local cholita street vendor) and use the collectivos (the drivers are sometimes affectionately called maestritas) as your transport to get around the city, they’re cheap, reliable, safe and an amazing way to experience travelling the city like a local. From Ovejuyo to Obrajes should cost no more than 2-3BoB, from the bus terminal to Iglesia de San Miguel, 5BoB maximum. Don’t let them charge you gringo prices haha! The teleférico is also a lot of fun and not too expensive either, very easy because it’s all colour coded. Bronze cafe is a bit more up market and they do really beautiful anticucho sandwiches (lush!), be sure to try the paceño - trust me, it’s worth it! You’re gonna love this city so much!!
