The old centre of town is wonderful, great markets and shops, classic cobbled streets, magnificent old buildings, friendly locals and lots of options for eating out and shopping. Many of the streets are quite steep, so not good for those with mobility issues.
The day I arrived was a carnaval day, all shopping stores were closed (february 25th), and the city was very noisy, with frequent "CHALLA" explosions out on the streats along the day. There were a coupe of restaurants opened. Also because of the altitud your movements must be limited.
One of the most wonderful things about La Paz was the importance and inclusion of the indigenous culture there. The cost of everything was so affordable. There were such a variety of events... from Death Road Cycle, the Salt Flats, a variety of City Walking Tours, the Telefrico public transport, Food Tours, and just strolling the bustling and colourful markets. It was outstanding and so unique.
It is a great place to go. Good prices in everything. Hotels, good food, clothing, taxis, tours i mean everything. Is so much fun and specially the death road tour is amazing and safe. The only no positive is the traffic and the way they drive is scary in the city.
Interesting city with full of mountains. Traffic in the city centre is terrible but what they call teleferico (small cable cars in 10 different colours/routes) makes up an efficient public transport. People seem genuinely friendly and want you to have a good experience in their country. I only stayed 3 nights in La Paz to visit Uyuni for a full day but I guess I could have stayed longer to explore this city. Red cap walking tour with a local guide in the city for 2.5 hours was an excellent introduction to the city. I throughly recommend it to the first time visitors. I visited San Francsico basilica museum and was greeted by a guide and spent 2.5 hours. So make sure that you visit either before or after lunch. I ended up having a late lunch because I could not tell my enthusiastic guide to cut the visit short. The high altitude affected me a little but with drinking a lot of water, mate tea and some tablets, it can be overcome.
We arrived in La Paz at a difficult time for the country so many of our tours and trips were cancelled or cut short. We’d love to come back, it’s been hard to visit and explore the places we wanted to but we made the most of having some down time in a great hostel.
The staff here was excellent. They were very attentive for my short stay. Since I was leaving early morning for my flight I was going to miss breakfast. Without asking they offered me a bagged breakfast to take with me. They also provided me with a wake up call to ensure I did not over sleep. The building is beautiful and the rooms are clean and decorated with traditional Bolivian decor. Very lovely place to stay
The stuff was amazing. From the begnning Rosa helped us to organize pick up from the airport as we arrived at 2am, so it was amazing to have someone come. She helped as well with turistic stuff. Additionally Helen was super nice, gave us advises about markets and did amazing breakfast, on our last day she even prepered typical bolivian breakfast. GREAT WOMEN!
The people!!! The wonderful manager and her great staff were just too good! Such nice and warm people. Especially the gentlman who worked the day shifts on the 7-8.10. The hotel!! Very clean, nice, great location. The experience was just exceptional!!! You made my visit to La paz unforgetable!
