Carnival - take a full body waterproof and be prepared to be soaked, sprayed etc.etc. Carnival is an exception and should not be taken as typical La Paz. There are lots of interesting shopping areas including the 'Witches' market area where you can fill your cauldron to the brim with eye of newt or tongue of bat or (absolutely certainly) foetus of Llama. It's a good kick off point for visits to Tiuanacu or Lake Titikaka and the Isla del Sol. You can even get one or two day trips to the Salar de Uyuni although I would recommend making that trip separately. There are lots and lots of international restaurants but they take some finding. If churches ring your bells then there are some really interesting architectural styles and exquisite internal decorations.
The old centre of town is wonderful, great markets and shops, classic cobbled streets, magnificent old buildings, friendly locals and lots of options for eating out and shopping. Many of the streets are quite steep, so not good for those with mobility issues.
The day I arrived was a carnaval day, all shopping stores were closed (february 25th), and the city was very noisy, with frequent "CHALLA" explosions out on the streats along the day. There were a coupe of restaurants opened. Also because of the altitud your movements must be limited.
One of the most wonderful things about La Paz was the importance and inclusion of the indigenous culture there. The cost of everything was so affordable. There were such a variety of events... from Death Road Cycle, the Salt Flats, a variety of City Walking Tours, the Telefrico public transport, Food Tours, and just strolling the bustling and colourful markets. It was outstanding and so unique.
It is a great place to go. Good prices in everything. Hotels, good food, clothing, taxis, tours i mean everything. Is so much fun and specially the death road tour is amazing and safe. The only no positive is the traffic and the way they drive is scary in the city.
Interesting city with full of mountains. Traffic in the city centre is terrible but what they call teleferico (small cable cars in 10 different colours/routes) makes up an efficient public transport. People seem genuinely friendly and want you to have a good experience in their country. I only stayed 3 nights in La Paz to visit Uyuni for a full day but I guess I could have stayed longer to explore this city. Red cap walking tour with a local guide in the city for 2.5 hours was an excellent introduction to the city. I throughly recommend it to the first time visitors. I visited San Francsico basilica museum and was greeted by a guide and spent 2.5 hours. So make sure that you visit either before or after lunch. I ended up having a late lunch because I could not tell my enthusiastic guide to cut the visit short. The high altitude affected me a little but with drinking a lot of water, mate tea and some tablets, it can be overcome.
everything was amazing! the employers were so attentive and pending, always with an smile ready to help us with everything. the breakfast was delicious and cooked at home (eggs, juice of frutilla and a hot drink (coffe, tea,…)) Doña Rosa and José were the best hostess: we missed some papers in our bus to Uyuni and they accompanied, helped and called in all the process. If you are going to La Paz, don’t doubt to go to the Anami Hotel.
Downtown La Paz, La Paz
Location is great. you can just walk everywhere. staff(especially Javier) was great. you can arrange every tour in La Paz via hotel. they are also a tour operator. you can leave your baggage. breakfast is simple but enough. normally the breakfast ends at 10am but one day we were late and they prepared our breakfast with great pleasure. Javier is very honest, he tells everything with pros and cons and he speaks very good English.
location was incredibly central but quiet. close to church that rang bells every 15 min but anything in the centre would wear them. Really quaint. our room looked over western La Paz and the Parliament which was such a treat. Bed was very comfy. Breakfast is simple but enough considering the good rate. $5 BOB I happened to leave on our table was still there after cleaning. Nice.
The staff were so so lovely and helpful to me when I was extremely sick during my stay at the hotel. They even went out and got me medicine as I was too ill to leave the room. The room is spacious, the shower is AMAZING (best I had in Bolivia) and the room has a heater too. it’s centrally located near the witches market.
Everyone here is kind and helpful. I came quite early and asked if I could have an early check-in by paying extra. But I just got a big and clean room at 7:30am without any extra charge. The location is also great and easy to access anywhere interesting in La Paz.
The restaurant has amazing cuisine. Trucha is really tasty there, and the attention is nice. Ah, and the coffee is made the way should be. You free have access to oxygen bottles and that is not a minor support in La Paz.
-nice bathroom with hot shower -restaurant on site -water refill for 5 bolivianos -good kitchen -staff kept everyone well informed about the protests -ATM and laundry place across the street, supermarket not far away
La Paz
Breakfast was way better than anywhere else in Bolivia, amazing stay, but most of all the staff was the nicest and most helpful I have seen in my travelling. Absolutely deserves all the best ratings.
The hotel is perfectly located if you need to work in the South of La Paz. The staff is great and the rooms are comfortable. The quality/price ratio is almost unbeatable.
Very modern and immaculate hotel in a lovely district of La Paz with lots of eateries nearby. The staff were beyond helpful. Wish we had stayed longer.
Quiet, peaceful, nice breakfast. Halfway between the two tourist areas of La Paz.
Very charm place in the best neighborhood of La Paz
