Antonio and his son Domenico were great hosts. Domenico fetched medicine for my partner when she was ill and took me out to shop for Calabrian specialties. Great hosts who were extremely helpful sending a bracelet to us that we accidentally left in the apartment. Reggio has undergone a renaissance and is beautiful. We came for the Riace Bronzes, and got much much more. Clean sea air, a beautiful long pedestrian Corso, friendly people, and great restaurants. Well worth a visit or detour.
The city offers so much, whatever you many be looking for. Along the coast there are many seaside villages to visit eg. Scilla, Tropea & Pizzo. A definite must on your visit to Pizzo is have a tartufo in Piazza della Repubblica.
Reggio Calabria town is super sophisticated with all top shops and more. Restaurants good quality. Nearby Scilla, a short and cheap train ride away worth a visit. You could almost swim across to Sicily!
You can enjoy historical places, very interesting muzeum with famous two bronze sculptures from greek era - Bronzi di riace. Many places for good italian food, fresh fish and good local wine. Temperature of sea water was cold but you can travel to near beach Scilla with nice beach and perfect water.
Amazing beaches and so much more cheaper than Positano and Taormina... You will have to learn to drive like a ballsey Italian but beaches like Tropea and Scilia well worth the adventure!!! Make sure you go check them out before the Tourist know all about them!!!
I was there once before, about 9 years ago, same time of year, and I felt that Reggio has completely changed since my last visit. The streets, restaurants, shops, beach, bars.. not nearly as popular, and not nearly as hustle and bustle as they once were. It definitely felt like tourists have found other more attractive locations to spend their time.
