It seems that most visitors to Melk come from the river cruises and are targeted at the Abbey. That is a worthwhile stop, but the city is making an effort to add other "tourist attractions", including some events and a nice historical walk. We took the latter and enjoyed learning more about the history of the area.
We were riding the Donauradweg, and Melk is a good spot for a layover, with good, affordable restaurants, things to do and see, a staffed rail office for making future reservations, and has easy access to and from the Danube Bike Path. The town changes a bit when the cruise boat visitors arrive, but they don't stay long and by evening, there is a nice feeling to the place. The Ratskeller and the Brewery for food are good spots,...the little deli on the main square will make you a great sandwich at a good price for and outing or the next days travels.
