Lithgow is a upcoming regional town close to some of Australia’s best natural beauty. It’s a good place to stay to be close to Jenolan Caves, the Blue Mountains, Lake Lyell, Wolgan Valley and Evans Crown. Take a drive through to Oberon or Rydal to see some spectacular rolling hills and mountain views. All close enough to Sydney (3hrs) that you can leave Friday night after work and have a good night’s sleep to begin your Western NSW weekend getaway!
The Blast Furnace was our favourite. We've been there so many times, in the afternoon and evening. Great for photos and star gazing. Lithgow is also close to Mayfield Gardens, which is our favourite place to visit in Spring and Autumn. Lithgow also has enough shops and restaurants to make it convenient enough to stay for a few days. Best restaurant so far is Frankies, which we dined in every time we stayed, and even got our friends to try, who really enjoyed too.
Lithgow seems to me to be remaking itself in a remarkable way: wonderful art galleries such as Gang Gang in the town and in surrounding towns such as Portland, great places to eat and meet such as The Tin Shed and it’s full of beautiful historic mining cottages and churches.
Great location for a stop over travelling to the Central West. Lake Lyell great for water sports like fishing, camping too. Plenty of places to eat, scenic drives and historic villages to visit. Easy to get around, can drive or catch a train.
Wow, so much to see there which we didn’t expect. Surprisingly nice town which has improved over the years. Glow worm tunnel a marvel, and not too far out of town. Road is a bit rough, but worth the trip. Small Arms Museum amazing! I’m not necessarily into guns, but this collection is world class! Manufacturing areas still in basically their original condition and a bit of a treasure trove. Powerhouse Museum eat your heart out!! Food offering in town not bad. Tourist information centre amazingly helpful. Road parallel to Main Street fuel of interesting old buildings and schools. Hoskins Church garden is a beautiful, peaceful, sanctuary and good place to visit. Blast Furnace site pretty special and historically interesting.
Stopped overnight on way home to Sydney. Long weekend traffic so decided to book a night . Lithgow blast furnace very good at sunset. Small Arms Factory a bonus attraction to visit. Sydneysiders tend to drive thru on way home or from home. Will explore a bit more next drive through
