I live in Morwell so I am biased, I like Morwell as it is within 2 hours of the city, beaches and mountains. It has the Rose gardens, Nice lake at Kernot hall. Multicultural and every one is friendly and says hello. The place is transitioning from the local Power industry to a diverse range of industry's. The government is setting up information hubs, There is a new technology school being built. A forensic centre has also opened. There is still plenty of manufacturing being done in the area with the local skilled tradespeople. The education front it also covered with a University located in Churchill. Still lots of farms and faming communities in the area. Local wineries and local hiking/biking trails round out the area.
Morwell holds childhood memories as we lived there 70 years ago. Obviously there have been much progress and lots of changes. I see Morwell through sentimental eyes so only see where my memories were made.
The area looked a bit sad and run down but I found the people fine. The restaurants were mostly closed as it was a Monday with only a pizza shop open for food. One of the restaurant's looked interesting and I will try it next timeI am there if it is open. The train line running through the town is unfortunate and getting around takes some time on foot.
Morwell isn't my choice of place to stay but it was close to where I needed to be. It's ok. I only went to the motel for sleeping. Didn't eat locally. It's a little difficult to get around the CBD atm as the main street has a diversion in place due to roadworks.
We arrived Saturday afternoon and just about everything was shut. Red Rooster or Maccas the only choice for lunch. Dinner was O.K. at the bowling club but chef needs to lay deep fried battered fish on an absorbent towel to soak up the excess fat retained through cooking from frozen to plate. The club was good, staff excellent. Next night at the Morwell club was smorgasbord as much as you can eat night. We are seniors and it cost about $45,00 for two. Really good value on a Sunday night. Nice staff. Town is spread out and disjointed, there are more lawyers in the town than any other type of business and judging by the people roaming round they would do a good trade. The Morwell recreation reserve was a really nice country footy ground. The surface was fantastic.
Morwell is a regional hub town, and has a wonderful Art Gallery, which often has first rate visiting exhibitions, but the curators arrange great showings of Australian and visiting artists too. Always worth a long visit, and the cafe is lovely too. Its close to the mountains, and locally the coal mining and power industries, and especially the reclamation works, are really interesting. Good infrastructure, including trains to and from Melbourne, and newish shopping centres mean you need rarely go further for good shopping. Local arts and crafts, including markets, are full of interest and great wares.
