Portland needs to boast about the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Tae Rak much more. It is absolutely fabulous and the Gunditmara Indigenous people are rightly proud of what they have, and are continuing, to achieve. The site contains 5,000 year old eel traps. The Gunditjmara are building an eel industry. The tour and tasting platter of eel and other products were just fabulous - learnt lots and it was a privilege to be there. Also ate at Clock on the Bay - excellent food and service. And Cape Bridgewater is most definitely worth a second visit, with extraordinary limestone petrified formations and a great beach. Easy to get around and surprisingly beautiful. Will be back to do more exploring of Budj Bim National Park.
Loved the beaches, Portland main beach, Cape Bridgewater and Nelson. Less touristy and very authentic. Great walks and sightseeing. Town is extremely well equipped with supermarkets, pharmacies, shops, hospital etc. The locals are very friendly and helpful. A little harder to go out for quality food, but we did discover the most sensational artisan baker hiding up a laneway called Bakehouse and a new contemporary cafe also up a side street called Twelve Fold that brew Melbourne quality coffee so we were then relieved.
It's an industrial town with less charm than Port Fairy but things you can see and experience (working port, smelter, marine museum) plus heaps of accessible coastal walks and sights. Also some good clothing shops and cafe's, including some art sand craft shops which were really quite good. Also recommend taking the tram tour around the town - history lesson.
Very good coastal scenery surrounding Portland - scenic drives. The trip on the cable car which takes you on a tour overlooking the harbour is very good and very informative. It is run by volunteers who are very efficient and knowledgeable - well worth taking this trip.
The port area is very interesting to observe. There are many scenic walks and trails along the coast. Cape Bridgewater has a beautiful beach and amazing scenery. Fallthrop Lagoon is a nice walk in town.
We stayed 4 nights and it was amazing. Our first night we had dinner at Mac's Hotel. Definitely well worth the money. Beautiful meals and all so BIG and we couldn't eat them all. After dinner we went to see the Port Nelson Lighthouse working. It is definitely well worth seeing. Next day we did a drive all around town. Having been there last year I decided to take my sister and mum to watch the wharfs working. The tip trucks with the dog trailers going on the big hoists which go up in the air on at least a 45degree angle to empty out the wood chips. Such an amazing sight to see. We watched it for a while and them grabbed the most DELICIOUS pies from Portland French Hot bread Bakery and OMG I wish we had one back here. We ate them down on the pier and watched everyone fishing for a while and then went down to Cape Bridgewater. Such a beautiful place to see. We did a day trip to Mount Gambier which was beautiful. Came back along the coastal route and pulled into many little places on the way back. Had lunch at a lovely cafe' in a little town called Port MacDonnell. Next day we took a trip back to look around Port Fairy and they had a Folk Festival going on so it was absolutely PACKED. So we had Fish 'n'chips from East Beach Fish 'n' chips and OMG they were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Went back to Portland again and drove up and down the streets and then sat down at the wharf watching the boats coming and going. I did want to take mum and my sister on the tram tour but my sister had come down with a cold and mum struggled with walking and the tram stop was packed with people so we gave it a miss. I went on it last year and absolutely loved it. Definitely well worth going on. The boys loved the skatepark and miss it so much since coming back. Lol.
The views were great. Area is quiet and therefore we were able to chill out and get some badly needed rest. The apartment is approximately 15 minute walk to waterfront hotels and restaurants. This was no problem as we welcomed the walk back to the apartment after a big heavy meal. The room was clean and the facilities was excellent. We will definitely come back to Clifftop Apartments. The host, Andy, was very welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.
The atmosphere and character of the building.. The host Ruth was lovely and very approachable as to was the kitchen staff. The rooms were very comfortable and supplied tea, coffee and biscuits in the room and a fridge... Motel service but with a little extra, Victoria House had a homely feel with the guest room offering sherry and port along with home made fruit cake what a inviting touch to your stay.. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Victoria House...
I loved having Foxtel and the option of watching movies. I also loved the fact that our room was near the swimming pool.Robert at Reception gave exceptional service- I looked at the swimming pool and he offered me towels for the pool.
The hosts were both very lovely. The building was a little old but extremely clean and comfortable. We stayed whilst attending a wedding in portland, good value for money and would not hesitate to stay here again.
Customer service and the people were great, the room was very clean and had everything we needed for our two night stay, very close to Portland town center, plenty of restaurant/take away and bars close by...
The location was better than expected. Close to the beach and all amenities that Portland had to offer. Cable car/tram travelled right past the front gate.
