It's a beautiful old house with a rich history. The hotel was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was great! The lady who runs the hotel was delightful. The museum was very interesting, showing a more human side of the soldiers without losing the sobriety of the historical context.

Spent most of my time visiting places across the border in French Flanders, but chose to stay just outside Poperinge owing to its location and ease to get to places in both Belgium and France. Went into the town on two evenings to eat at restaurants of which one was ok and the other excellent. The other evenings I went to nearby Ieper. For adults I think that there is ample to do and see in Poperinge and the surrounding area for a couple of days, particulary if you have an interest WW1 or beer, which fortunately I do.

Poperinge is a charming, traditional town with the added attraction of being in a beer producing region. The main market square has cafes, restaurants and hotels and can be lively. This is a good place to stroll around and enjoy at a leisurely pace. The Talbot House museum is a quality attraction and the overall vibe is friendly.

If you like beer and are interested in the cultivatoin of hops, you should not miss Poperinge. It is the perfect location for excursions to Sint-Sixtus abbey, where you can taste one of the worlds best beers (Westvleteren 12) and to St. Bernardus Brewerey, which offers a wide selection of beers and a very nice brewery tour and rooftop bar with sight on the hop fields. In Poperinge itself, you find the hop museum which is also worth a visit. All this can be combined with learning about the role of the town and its surroundings during WW I and WW II. You can find cemetarys and monuments as well as some remainders of the military infrastructure. Getting to Poperinge with public transportation is easy, getting around a bit less so. however, there is a bus that you can call up on demand - I did not test that, but rather went by foot. It is also quite easy to rent bicycles. If I were to return, I would try and schedule it such that I can see the harvesting of the hops or go there around March to tast the hop shoots.

We were cycling and enjoyed the way marked routes around the town. The Talbot House museum is a memorable visit, buy a combined entrance ticket from them if you also intend to visit the Flanders Field museum in Ypres. The market square is attractive with a range of bars to enjoy a beer at the end of a day. Restaurant La Paix offers a really good value Market menu, the fish stew was excellent. The Cuvalier beer shop just outside town is well worth a visit.

I visit for Talbot House and its atmosphere as well as cups of tea, find much quieter than Ieper, but not far to travel to and get out and about to the battlefields, for the non war people some very good walks

This is a town steeped in history, with very casual ambiance in the town centre. The three gothic cathedrals are architectural gems and the restaurants that dot the Grand Place all serve tasty local fare. Everything is within walking distance. Of special note is the hops museum which takes one through all the process from farm to beer.

The main hotel was currently closed for a major refurbishment, but the adjacent reception area was very welcoming and friendly, check-in was straightforward and the guesthouse accommodation, 40yds from the main hotel was first class. The pop-up restaurant, a 3 minute walk from the guesthouse was very well appointed for providing breakfast and evening meals if so desired. The family run establishment is to be very highly recommended.

We love this hotel, for the central position in the lovely town of Poperinge, for its charme and the kindness of its staff, for the excellency of the restaurant. This time we have been given a room in the new wing of the hotel, even more comfortable for the presence of a lift.
