Although evidence shows humans have been present in the region for thousands of years, the first long-lasting settlements date back to the Middle Age. For a long period, the destiny of the village was attached to the influence of the Interlaken Abbey, until the times of the Protestant Reformation.
Tourist activity begun in the 18th century, bringing new life and wealth to the village. This town is just staggering beautiful.
This town is just staggering beautiful. We went in October and it wasn't too crowded but there were a lot of big groups of tourists even in Oct. I can't imagine how crowded this town is in peak summer months.

Grindelwald is a busy town that still retains the legendary Swiss charm, lots of shops and restaurants, but with easy access to trams and hiking trails. Free bus ticket for staying in many hotels gets you to the “Terminal” from where you can access all the local transportation options to other regions. Many options for dining. Scenery is spectacular with the largest mountains seemingly rising right out of town.

Grindelwald is a great town for travelers of all ages.
Grindelwald is a great town for travelers of all ages. It is very easy to get there by train, and the town is walkable. There are well-marked buses as well. Lots to do from hiking to sitting in a cafe and admiring the scenery. If weather is unpleasant, there is a public indoor swimming pool with a slide and baby pool area. There is also an ice skating rink, but we don't recommend it, compared to the many other options. Above the rink is an indoor ropes course -- do call before you go. We went in the hours it should have been open, but no one was there.

This was my first visit outwith ski season so great to see places not possible in winter, including glacier canyon, pfingstegg, Alpkäse festival, wild flower meadows and of course seeing the cows and hearing the bells.
Also my first visit as a solo traveller, age 74. Always felt very safe and met many lovely people. Transport was so easy with the SBB App and google maps on the phone.
My one regret was not getting to Bachalpsee due to early snow and ice. Will be back.

I’ve visited Grindelwald many times in winter for the skiing but wanted to experience it in autumn. Such a beautiful area. I enjoyed the colours of nature and visiting Pfingstegg and the Glacier Canyon which are not open in winter and the Alpkäse festival at Männlichen.
At 74 and a single traveller I felt very safe. Trains, busses and cable cars were easy to navigate. All you need are the SBB app and Google Maps.

Grindelwald is an ideal location for exploring the Jungfrau...
Grindelwald is an ideal location for exploring the Jungfrau area, including Mannlichen, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald First. The scenery is stunning and there are many walking tracks. We stayed at the Terminal area close to the Eiger Express and Mannlichen gondolas and train station, a little outside the town and very quick to access these routes. Our favourite place to visit was Grindelwald First with so many activities, although it was disappointing that some sell out very quickly, even if you have booked. Lauterbrunnen is best viewed from above. The trip to the town was disappointingly touristy and crowded.

The Gletscharten is a lovely traditional alpine hotel in the quieter part of Grindelwald. We had a large corner room on the 2nd floor with stunning views towards the Wetterhorn, Eiger and Grosse Scheidegg. The hotel and rooms are spotless and the staff are friendly, efficient and attentive. We did not have half board but ate twice at the restaurant and both times it was fabulous.Breakfast was lovely and the hotel is very well placed for all the sites, walks and local transport etc.
This hotel is in a great location. It is right in the heart of Grindelwald. The best part was we had a room with a view and it was a super view of the Eiger from the balcony. I could sit out there all day. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The parking was convenient. The rooms were Swiss clean and there was a great free tea bar. It was nice to have a tea on the balcony watching the sunset.
This hotel has one of the best views in Grindelwald and the location is very nice just outside the city in a quiet neighbourhood. Very spacious rooms with all the facilities. There was a fridge in the room and a tea/coffee maker and microwave just outside, which was very convenient. The breakfast was Good.
The hotel is in the heart of Grindelwald ❤️ plus;
1. Very good location
2. Amazing view (see the pic)
3. Comfortable room
4. The terminal is just 2-5 minutes away
5. You get free city pass which has alot of benefits.
This is the best hotel in Grindelwald - modern, convenient, has a pool and SPA, excellent breakfast, underground parking lot. It is on the expensive side but in my view totally worth it. Highly recommended.
