Set in Calama, 1 mi from Zorros del Desierto Stadium, Ibis Budget Calama offers accommodations with a restaurant, free private parking, a bar and a shared lounge. The staff at the front desk was amazing. They helped us call the airline and find my wife's bag, since we don't speak Spanish that well. The parking was secure and on the property and there was a mall and shopping directly across the street. We plan on staying here again a few days before we leave Chile to travel home.

It met our needs and was appropriate for the price point. You had good coffee, a modest selection of good fruit, and good croissants. The eggs were a bit runny for my wife's tastes. Your staff tried their best even with limited English ability. We got by with my intermediate Spanish. It was predictable like when we have stayed at Ibis in Europe.

It's true when people tell you there's nothing to do here. It's a stop off for San Pedro, that's about it. Be careful with your stuff there, met some Polish travellers recently who had passports and bags etc stolen.
This is a great hotel complex with a great restaurant I'm just not sure that you would really want to stay there given that there is really nothing touristy to do in Calama. A number of websites including the Chile Govt indicate that you can day trip to San Pedro de Atacama on a daily basis from Calama which is not true. You would have to relocate to San Pedro de Atacama to be able to fully take advantage of tours in the region because the start times are 05.00 am. The hotel advertises under Reception services Tour Desk and when I asked, they said that they didn't and would have to go to a bus company in the town centre or another hotel which advertises tour to San Pedros etc but that hotel doesn't. Having walked the streets of Calama and being referred from one bus company to another There are NO TOUR COMPANIES IN CALAMA. You have to go to San Pedro de Atacama and stay there if seeing the Atacama region is what you want to do.
Calama in itself is not the destination. It's an overnight point for San pedro atacama if you have an early or late flight in. There is nothing to see other than a big mine. The airport is really nice and new. The town has a big Lider like Wal-Mart for supplies. Not great eating options, we bought empanadas off a guy outside Lider and drove onto San pedro. Watch out for gas stations, guy tried to charge us extra 20000 pesos!
It's a "transit" city where most tourists stop over back from or to going to San Pedro de Atacama but it is more authentic, the inhabitants are nice, the Feria Modelo market for stocking up on good food, fresh fruits and veggies at a much more affordable price than in San Pedro. Very coloured city, amazing sunsets, farf from the San Pedro craziness and way more authentic.
We came across homeless people/drug addicts when taking the taxi from the airport and walking to the supermarket. The whole city is probably not like that but we clearly did not enjoyed our stay there. We did not feel safe at all...
As a town Calamari is just a provincial place with a small downtown and a nice park. Historically it is connected to the autrocities of the Pinochet coup d etat and the most interesting is the visit of the biggest open Copper mine in the world. Arranged through CODELCO office it was an interesting experience.
Calama
The staff were exceptional- friendly and welcoming. Our room was spotless and the bed was comfy. We had no problems with noise and had a great sleep. This place is nicely situated and close to restaurants and many other stores. A huge store “Jumbo” is a 7-10 minute walk and here you can buy all your groceries. The staff allowed us to store our luggage until we caught our evening bus and even let us spend time in the common area. Muchos gracias!
Situated in the lively part of the city. Good choice of restaurants nearby.
