This is a great hotel complex with a great restaurant I'm just not sure that you would really want to stay there given that there is really nothing touristy to do in Calama. A number of websites including the Chile Govt indicate that you can day trip to San Pedro de Atacama on a daily basis from Calama which is not true. You would have to relocate to San Pedro de Atacama to be able to fully take advantage of tours in the region because the start times are 05.00 am. The hotel advertises under Reception services Tour Desk and when I asked, they said that they didn't and would have to go to a bus company in the town centre or another hotel which advertises tour to San Pedros etc but that hotel doesn't. Having walked the streets of Calama and being referred from one bus company to another There are NO TOUR COMPANIES IN CALAMA. You have to go to San Pedro de Atacama and stay there if seeing the Atacama region is what you want to do.
Calama in itself is not the destination. It's an overnight point for San pedro atacama if you have an early or late flight in. There is nothing to see other than a big mine. The airport is really nice and new. The town has a big Lider like Wal-Mart for supplies. Not great eating options, we bought empanadas off a guy outside Lider and drove onto San pedro. Watch out for gas stations, guy tried to charge us extra 20000 pesos!
It's a "transit" city where most tourists stop over back from or to going to San Pedro de Atacama but it is more authentic, the inhabitants are nice, the Feria Modelo market for stocking up on good food, fresh fruits and veggies at a much more affordable price than in San Pedro. Very coloured city, amazing sunsets, farf from the San Pedro craziness and way more authentic.
We came across homeless people/drug addicts when taking the taxi from the airport and walking to the supermarket. The whole city is probably not like that but we clearly did not enjoyed our stay there. We did not feel safe at all...
As a town Calamari is just a provincial place with a small downtown and a nice park. Historically it is connected to the autrocities of the Pinochet coup d etat and the most interesting is the visit of the biggest open Copper mine in the world. Arranged through CODELCO office it was an interesting experience.
Calama
Nice option if you somehow end up in Calama. Clean room/bathroom etc. Booking price was cheaper than paying directly at the hotel so I booked via booking.com while in the lobby. The "hotel" is really more like a few apartment buildings (see pic on Booking) but same difference. Parking was secure with gate and guard. Seems like it's mostly lodging for local miners.
Service was great all around. We arrived very early, they took care of our luggage, let us use the bathrooms to freshen up after a 16h bus ride and we even got a free coffee. Reception desk was very helpful in organizing transfer to Calama Airport. On top, the well equipped gym (for hotels) was great and the breakfast menu was very diverse.
Landowner and her family are very nice, kind and helpfull people. Paula (not sure about her name) offered me a drive to the airport, cause i had the box with the bicycle and it is hard to find a big taxi in Calama (and in Chile as well).
IBIS Calama is generell a good option. Rooms are very clean with comfortable beds and nice shower with hot water. The location is okay and it's walkable from/to the bus terminal and the center with restaurant and markets.
