The accommodation is located in a pleasant part of Quintero, close to stunning cliffs and wild beaches and far enough from the industrial landscape, so typical for the town. The owners are absolutely amazing, happy to help with anything and everything. We were invited by them to a lovely evening gathering, (socially-distanced due to COVID - very appreciated). Thank you Miguel and Luzmarina for your warm welcome (and for the mask!)!

Spectacular rocky shoreline on the peninsula but spoiled somewhat by the nearby industry. The town is a working port, not some Chilean Skegness (for that, and the attendant hordes, go to Horcon nearby), so it has character and the usual grubby bits. Go out to the point (Pirate's Cave) and watch scores of pelicans and boobies stream past on their way out to the fishing grounds, and keep a weather eye out for whales and dolphins - its a good spot to see them from the shore (binoculars necessary, it's not SeaWorld).
Quintero had a glorious past, but now is a run down industrial and fishing port. Beaches are heavily polluted by oil spills. It is home to the eldest yatching club in Chile and an Air Force base. North-facing bay provides safe-haven beaches and calm waters most of the year, but when the wind comes from the north, the surf is very aggressive - many sunken and destroyed boats lie in the seabed. Crime rate is high and in summer it is overcrowded. Locals are hard working: Seafood is cheap and offered at various "picadas" along the main road: good fresh fried empanadas are offered year round at "El Hoyo" and during the summer at stalls near the beaches. Cheese empanadas (+combination with seafood) are best. Weekend fish and seafood at the market near the plaza. "Café El Pirata" offers good views of the sea and industrial area. "Cocina de Teuh" is a good sized restaurant for events in area: prices not as convenient as the picadas but with greater views of the Pacific Ocean. Nice drives up and down the coast, but would rather stay at other touristic spots north/south of this town unless visiting for business one of the large industries.
