Gorgeous small university city, intimate with walking distance to the mountains, center tower with city view offered. Very quiet getaway. Most locals are patient with a little to zero German speaking English native speaker. Dare I say is a nice place to honeymoon
An attractive small city with lots of lovely fin-de-siecle and modernist architecture - I could have wandered the streets for ages. A little down-at-heel but I feel that added to its charm. Situated on a slope, which makes for interesting wandering. Surrounding countryside also very pretty. We didn't have time to go to many bars or restaurants but the atmosphere (Fri. night) was nice and it felt safe.
Jena has got everything for most everyone, busy city centre, theatre, cinema, pubs and clubs and plenty of history, If that is not your thing (it's not mine) than the surrounding hills are outstanding for walking, hiking or mountain biking as well.
It is a beautiful town, with many beautiful buildings built over a century ago, combining the old, the ancient and the modern alltogether. The public transport is excellent, and there are only a few cars in the city center. However, if you don't speak German, this town is not for you. There is NOTHING tourist friendly, all is in German, they don't even have a translation in English in their ancient monuments so the tourists can know the history of the city. I saw many beautiful buildings which I have no idea what they were, if they are public, when they were built, nothing. And you rarely find anyone speaking fairly good English, I could not ask for directions, could not communicate with anyone, and it was impossible even to order food at the restaurant, or to buy souvenirs from a "Tourist shop", they speak to you in German and who cares. The same with the train, the buses , the tram, all information, SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS (!!!), train stops etc in German. Thank God there was no major problem, any change, any safety issue or danger, because I would never know. However, guess what, YOU DON'T NEED TO LEARN GERMAN TO GO TO GERMANY AS A TOURIST, you just need to go to ANY other country which values their tourists, respect and honor them by having all signs, all information, all tourist atractions, EVERYTHING, translated in English.
Jena is a hidden gem. Lovely market square and churches, and the world's first planetarium together with other associations with Carl Zeiss. Excellent range of cafes and restaurants and a botanical garden. Beware- nothing much opens until after 10. Good train service to Berlin and nearby Weimar.
Quite a boring city, unfortunately. Not much to see at all and also quite average restaurant. The city itself is also not beautiful at all. The only positive thing about our trip was the hotel which was amazing.
Staff is very helpful, on the day I checked out I had to leave 6 am. , the staff arranged breakfast to go for me . Wonderful!!!! At the time I made a booking, I don't know that the hotel will give a free voucher for public transportation during my stay which saved me . The hotel should inform free public transportation which I believe will attract visitors.
Jena
English speaking staff, super patient and friendly. Super clean bathroom as well, filled with clean trash bins and full paper towels. Bed and pillows was super comfy. Had my best sleep in months. Mr Alex offered me a map and a Jena history book for my curiosity. He showed me places of interest as well.
Everything the hotel has offered was wonderful and to our comfort. Its a well located silent place ,naturally rich surroundings .The staff is very supportive and cheerful.Open space in the reception ,galleries at all floors and spacious wash rooms. Coolbreeze and open area around gives a heavenly feel.
A modern hotel in the very centre of the city. We did not get a parking space but a public parking lot was very close, at almost the same rate. Staff very helpful. I appreciated drinking water in the room which we could refill at any point of the day/night. Quiet and pleasant. Easily accessible.
I loved everything ! The place was so beautiful and clean. The surroundings are amazing ! This is actually one of the best apartments I've stayed in in Germany so far. It was so peaceful. The design was sophisticated yet quite simple. It still feels like a dream to me.
The staff were attentive, courteous and helpful. The room was clean, the beds comfortable, and the breakfast very good. I would certainly like to pay a longer visit to Jena, and I see no reason not to use the Maxx Hotel again.
