Very attractive city with important historical sights and impressively kept gardens and parks. Amalia library, Belvedere Palace and gardens, and Goethe museum/house were memorable. I would recommend Weimar for visitors with some interest in Goethe, German classism, German philosophers particularly Nietzche and/or German modernism and the Bauhaus movement.
I recommend getting the 48 hour Weimar card, which gives you access to the best museums and museum houses and free public transport. Tourist information is a good place to start and they can provide you with a free map and information about the surrounding areas. The only thing I found a bit strange is they couldn’t tell me anything about the open air exhibit „Die Zeuge (the Witnesses)“, a photography exhibit featuring survivors of Buchenwald. They are exhibited in various locations around the city and cannot be missed. The girl at information said she had no idea about it. I had wanted to know where I could see model and have some further information. I finally found the beginning of the exhibit, which starts in the square outside the train station. If you are in Weimar it is worth stopping and remembering.
Incredibly historic town, with many monuments and more cobblestones than could be counted. Everything was exceptionally clean, and also very calm and quiet. Be a bit careful about credit cards: most businesses do NOT accept American cards (only German ones) so be sure to have cash on hand. As a side note: if you are there when the Lyric Opera Studio Weimar is in performance mode, GO!!!! You won't be sorry; it's a musical gold mine.
It's easy to find vegan food in Weimar, even though there aren't any restaurants that are exclusively vegan. I ate vegan burgers, sushi, Vietnamese food. There's also vegan cake at "Fama Café & Bücher", such a great little café! You don't need public transport. (Almost) Everything is in walking distance. If you want to visit "Buchenwald", however (and you definitely should!!!), you need to take the bus. Buchenwald is by far the most impressive spot in or around Weimar. You will not regret going there. Take your time there.
I had an audition in Weimar towrads the Hochschule fur Musik Weimar ''Franz Liszt''. My repertoire were challenging, such as Debussy Sonata and Waxman Carmen Fantasy. The local German pianist was nice to me and the city overall was cozy and warm. The curve roadways with intermittent German historical architectures were impressive.
Schiller, Goethe, Hans Christian Andersen and a myriad of other classic authors have called Weimar home and their mark is still felt. Weimar offers amazing museums, enough to last you more than one day, beautiful parks with kilometers of scenic walking tours, excellent restaurants and lots of live entertainment during the summer. For two or three days you will not be lacking anything to do!
