Weimar is not only a charming town in central Germany, but it has also been an important cultural centre for almost 3 centuries. Home to artists like Goethe, Schiller, Liszt, Bach and Strauss, the city's legacy is only comparable to the beauty of its idyllic surroundings.
It was between 1758 and 1828, during the regencies of Duchess Anna Amalia and her son Duke Carl August, that the town became the capital of German Enlightenment. In 1919, it saw the founding of the Bauhaus movement by Walter Gropius, and the sessions of the Constitutional Assembly of the so-called Weimar Republic.
It has numerous places that have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, and it was the European Capital of Culture in 1999. Some of the best Weimar hotels are located in the south, particularly near the German National Theatre, Goethe’s house, and the City Palace.
The city is also famous for its ‘Onion Market’, held every year in October. If you’re planning to come to Weimar during the festival, check the hotel availability with enough time in advance.
The local railway station has express lines linking to Frankfurt, Dresden and Berlin. The nearest airports are Erfurt Airport and Leipzig/Halle Airport. Whether you’re looking for cheap accommodation or 5-star hotels, check out the Weimar deals on Booking.com!
I didn't do justice to Weimar's historic sites, largely as I commuted several times to a nearby city for other matters. The park along the Ilm river is definitely worth a visit; at its far end (looking from the city), the bee museum is a pleasant place that may be especially worthwhile for families with kids. The museum for prehistoric history of Thuringia was also a worthwhile stop. The nearby expansive historical cemetery is a good destination for those who generally have an appreciation for such places. Distinguished families, some of whose surnames may be well-known to visitors with relevant background, have their final resting places, sometimes in a row, at the edge of the cemetery and I think also elsewhere. The area near the railway station (still south of it) has some nice spots. I especially liked a bakery there. Prices lower than in my hometown, and very good bread and rolls. This suggests to me generally that even in a city with many tourists, it is not bad to look at the more quiet areas (which are still in easy walking distance from the main drawcards of the city in the case of Weimar) to get a smile and perhaps to save a few coins. One may even get advice on what to do! If you depend on supermarkets while traveling, it may be worthwhile locating them early on before or during your trip and to be aware that they may close at 9pm (not all do though).
All the museums provide audio guides, some of them are with free entrance. Everything is located in walking distance to each other. One needs at least 2 entire days to visit all the museums without exploring nice nature or park. A (entire) 3 days trip would be perfect!
Weimar is a great small city packed with history and I certainly could have done with another day or two there. There is plenty for fans of classic German history (Schiller and Goethe) plus more modern times (Weimar Republic, New Weimar and Bauhaus for example) and everything is walkable. Also the Germany Bee Museum!
A quaint city of 65,000. Incredibly rich in art and literature. Beautiful buildings, lots of happenings in the streets, lots of pedestrian streets, and a wide choice of dining venues. I would say that it is an undiscovered jewel for those who look for a culture-rich travel experience.
Historical old city with an interesting museum on Bauhaus and lots of older buildings and some other museums. There is also a park in English landscaping style. Easily reached by railway or by car. If you are there, take some time to visit nearby Erfurt too.
I was made to feel very welcome. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. I went to see things relating to Goethe and visited all the relevant places. A shame Frau von Stein's house and the Stadtschloss were closed. I had hoped the places that were open like Schiller's home and Goethe's places had been a little more furnished even if the furniture couldn't be authentic. It would have created a frienlier more lived in atmosphere.
Weimar
The hotel was literally just down the road from Weimar Hbf and a 5 minute walk away. I had an en-suite mini-apartment with a mini-kitchen, complete with fridge and cooker, in a nice area for mere peanuts. It's not the Ritz, but brilliant for the price. p.s. The owner/manager spoke fluent English. I'm British and I speak fluent German, but when I had a technical issue with the cooker, he was able to help me on the phone, without me having to rack my brain!
There were a wide variety of items at the breakfast buffet for every taste. The location was just outside the historic district, but easily in walking distance to all local sights in Weimar. Some attractions such as the cemetery where Goethe is buried, is right next to the hotel. The train station is a bit of a hike, but no problem for anybody with two healthy legs. The room interior was nothing special, but fit for purpose for a 2-3 day stay.
The hotel is located very conveniently next to the railway station. The vicinity of my room was very quiet, allowing one to vent the room at night. The reception staff are friendly, some very much so. Room prices appear to be relatively stable, perhaps my trip didn't fall into a very busy period though.
A fantastic hotel to stay at. Everything is five star quality yet the price is very fair and only match a three star hotel. A home away from home in a wonderful city, Weimar. Highly recommended, worth a journey on its own merits. Thank you for four memorable days. Will be back.
This is definitely the best hotel I experienced this year. Absolutely excellent room, bed, clean and stylish, central location in Weimar. All the staff cares of the guests with high empathy and friendliness. The quality of breakfest outstands many 5* hotels!
Excellent location. We travelled with our dog. In the room the hotel had. Already placed water bowls and a blanket with a dog treat. There is a large park in front of the hotel that is beautiful and also very handy if you travel with a dog.
Weimar
Everything was wonderful! Beautiful atmosphere with birdsong and live music wafting in through the windows, and a patio to enjoy it outside! Many of the same IKEA furnishings I have at home so I felt very comfortable! Everything I needed!
Not the usual hotel, each room is different in style; very spacious and comfortable. Very good breakfast in the adjacent restaurant. Centrally located, close to the main points of interest and in walking distance to the next bus stop.
Weimar
Weimar is a fascinating city, lot's to see and lot's of history,3 days was not enough. The apartment was in a nice street within walking distance from most of the places of interest.Hopefully I can return soon.
Good value for money: clean hotel, close to the old town, green area around, good breakfast. Our dog was treated very well and we could take her with us for the isolated breakfast room - which was very convenient.
The hotel is old but charming, clean and in good shape. The location is amazing, very central for walking to all sights. The bed was comfortable and it was quiet in the night, although I stayed on a Wednesday.
Weimar
Quaint little motel style hotel that has very clean spacious family room. Great location in a very walkable city; right next to Uni Weimar campus office
perfect price option. all what is needed you have there. you get whet you paid for so no complain can be made - its not a 4* hotel 🙂
Beautiful hotel and very spacious rooms. The service was great and the hotel was very central.
Room very comfortable and the breakfast buffet was excellent!
Excellent hotel in great city Weimar.
