Scratch beneath the small-town surface of Helsinki and you will find a cosmopolitan metropolis buzzing with a lively attitude and plenty of excitement. The relatively short-lived summer offers the best chance to appreciate the outdoors and sit on one of the popular café terraces, or even hit the Hietaniemi Beach, all of which can be enjoyed during the 20 hours of daylight.
Strolling around the streets of Helsinki will reveal an Empire-style of architecture, comparable to St. Petersburg. The greatest example of this is the green-domed Lutheran Cathedral which rises proudly out of the centre of Senate Square. From here the main shopping street of Aleksanterinkatu, affectionately known as Aleksi, runs towards Mannerheimintie and contains the largest department store in Scandinavia, called Stockmann. The up-market boulevard of Esplanadi runs alongside and is packed with exclusive boutiques.
Lovers of Nordic design will be thrilled by the Design Museum and the Ateneum Art Museum. Nature is in abundance on the beautiful archipelago which lies along the coast. A must-see is the Baltic fortress of Suomenlinna, where you just might forget you’re in a big city.

We stayed for 4 days and it was the perfect amount of time. Helsinki is one of the most gorgeous cities I've ever been too. It is so clean and well loomed after and I felt so safe the whole time I was there. However I would not say it was a touristy place, although this is not necessarily a bad thing! There are plenty of places to go and things to see and it's pretty easy enough to get by speaking English. Overall I am so glad I got to visit this gorgeous country and would highly recommend it be on people's bucket list destinations.
:-) An easy going city, nice people, an amazing new library, saunas, many churches, museums and galleries, good food, many small islands to visit, wonderful design district, very convenient public transport, although one can wander around on foot . :-( Lunch and dinner are served very early. Wine and food rather expensive
Air is clean and fresh! Very, very polite and caring people we met during our self FOC own walking tour to most tourist sites in Helsinki Town. Voluntarily passing by people will just stop and help to take our photos at the site. Car drivers stopped their cars in front of zebra cross when they saw you( tourists I thnk) crossing the road. Beautiful sceneries at many tourist sites. Delicious foods! We are so fortunate that there was a international food festival on during our walking days tour in Helsinki. We tasted various foods from different continentals.
It is a small city, with many parks. Everything is 15 mn walk away. Living in a metropolis of 30 million people where everything is at least 30 mn train or metro ride away or even more, that is of course surprising. * You can take your time, and this is great to just enjoy the moment * Check the MeetUp (application), because Helsinki is actually very dynamic. So if you want to go for a group walk with international people living in Finland, find some evening book club, chat with a drink, there are in fact plenty of them * Evening cultural life is dynamic: many theaters, ballet, danse events and reasonable pricing (my point of reference being from where I live, and where cultural activities are a lot mpore expensive) * If you like coffee an food, go on Google Map and check out. Many good places. * Everyone speaks English to a good to excellent level. Again being from a place where no local speaks English, this is a positive surprise and gives access to going pretty much everywhere and have a great experience * Kindness and niceness is part of what Finns are. :) * check the libraries, if only for the awesome architecture and desing * Walk everywhere, it is tought to get lost and you will discover nice parcs, buildings, and people to chat with. * Get the HSL app for riding the Tram (I was expecting a QR code to DL it on the tram stations but eventually there were none, and it is someone living in Helsinki who gave me the tip). * Ask for what you need, people will tell you.
This was my second trip to Helsinki, first was in 2001. The grandson who accompanied me this time speaks Finnish, having lived there for two years and is a native Swedish-English speaker. While working there, he didn't have time to sight-see, so this trip gave him a chance to explore and for me to enjoy his delight at new discoveries. Finnish architecture is amazing (don't miss the Pohjola Insurance Building inspired by the Kalevala - the Finnish national creation epic), the city is as clean as any Swiss city (we are Swiss-Americans); the transportation interface between trains, trams, buses and ferries is beyond compare (be sure to buy a HEL pass - great value). As a classical musician visiting Finnish colleagues to support them in their concerts, I am always amazed at the depth, variety, and quality of Finnish artistic culture. This is, after all, the land of Sibelius! Be sure to attend a concert in the Temppeliaukio Church, built into solid rock and one of the main concert venues in Helsinki: fantastic acoustics! Finns do not self-promote, so there are many secrets to uncover in the National Theater, Museum of Natural History, and so much more! You can't miss!
The guides of tours were very knowledgeable. I enjoyed discovering Finnish style saunas. Also the very attractive town of Porvoo and the amazing libraries in Helsinki. Overall the people were very kind and helpful. The public transport is very efficient and easy to use. I ate at the restaurants: Loyly, Savotta, Zetor and Finlandia Caviar (one of the best Lobster and caviar rolls I have ever tasted).
Average clean and amazingly located hotel in the city center of Helsinki. It takes not more than 10 minutes on foot to come from central train station. Staff was helpful, wi-fi worked fine, free coffee and tea in the reception (when it was open - trust me, not always open, even during a daytime). Free shampoo and shower gel bottles in the bathroom, TV inside the room with international channels, also there is an elevator to reach 5th or 6th floor where all rooms are located. Free storage rooms with a lockers for hotels guests.
Helsinki
Yes, is the cheapest but is a bit out of the city center, 40/50 min walking. Rooms are good for being that big and also clean as all the rest, toilets and kitchens (there are on each floor). The staff doesn't take much effort, never out of their box. At the check-in they don't give you info about the city or even where the toilets are. Just make you sign in and give the key. I understand to give a tour is a bit too much for a big hostel but at least some basic info about how to move around such a big hostel!
Katajanokka, Helsinki
This property is a bit hard to rate for me. I need to review it as a hostel but it's the first hostel I stayed at. I think the breakfast area looks nice, and has a nice ambient music, the sauna is nicer than some hotels I stayed at, and the location is really nice. The view from the room was lovely, and the surroundings are modern and offer a great walk opportunity. It's also easy to walk to the city center.
beautiful artsy hotel in the corner of Helsinki city center. a good tram stop within 2 minutes walking of the hotel building. mini market right beside it. I have to give special shoutout to the amazingly helpful staff and the compact room. breakfast was also above standard, loved the fried pancakes and mango/blueberry chia pudding. Please retain them when I revisit Helsinki again.
Good location, nice atmosphere and nice building. Love the area and love the feeling in the area and in Helsinki City center in general. There is something extra that's hard to put in words. The feeling of safety but freedom at the same time as in Europe in general. The European charm and the history mixed with modern. Nice hotel and city indeed.
Great Location, Minutes walking to the city center and main attractions. The hotel is perfectly designed. The room was very comfortable and attention was paid to the small details. The breakfast was excellent and very varied. Bottom line - we'll stay again for sure on our next visit to Helsinky.
It is near the port, at first I wasn’t happy about it but then I love it! You can reach the city center in 10’ walk. You have the tram at two blocks from the hotel just by a market that is open till 11pm. Its was a great and quien location for me. The breakfast its really Good!
This hotel is good for people which value design. Rooms are small but with smart and efficient design you do not feel any space limitation. Although is not in the city center bus stop is in front of the hotel and you reach the main railway station in 15 min, busses are regular.
Excellent hotel in the Helsinki centre. Kind and polite stuff. Junior suite room for 4 people's family was comfortable and larger than others hotel's in Finlandia. Breakfast offers different kinds of dishes, especially salmon. Very taste coffee in the breakfast time.
The hotel is the successful renovation of a former jail. Lovely The room is large and very quiet. Wifi works well. The breakfast is exceptional. The tram 4 stopping in front of the hotel is very useful as the hotel is outside of the city center
The location if the hotel is great! It is in the city center, you can reach all tourist destinstions on foot. Also Allas Sea Pool that I like a lot. The room was bigger that I expected which rarely happens. The bed was really confortable.
The hotel is close to the port and 15 minutes walk or 5 minutes tram ride to city center. Room was on a small size with maritime decor. Bathroom big and clean. Breakfast was one of the best I ever had with very nice staff.
The hotel is located in the city center near the Bus station, in the very nice place. The breakfast was excellent (I stayed before in Sokos hotels, and the breakfast was one of the reason why I selected this hotel).
Excellent hotel located in the city center. The comfort level is value for every penny you pay. The staff is great and very welcoming. Breakfast is also great. Rarely you find hotels so perfect.
Sörnäinen, Helsinki
The room was clean and big. the washroom was very tidy. Although the location is a bit away from city centre, there are sufficient food restaurants, 24h grocery shop and bars close to the hotel.
The hotel has an outstanding breakfast spread and an excellent dinner menu. For someone who has never been to Finland before, you can't ask for a better location. Great job Marski.
Beautifully decorated throughout, true design / boutique hotel. Super comfy, really loved breakfast, staff are the most caring and courteous.
The breakfast is just great. The location of the hotel is very convenient. City center, restaurants and shopping within walking distance.
Very nice breakfast buffet Great restaurant in the hotel Wonderful city center location
