Hotel Indigo Helsinki-Boulevard 4 stars

Hotel in Kamppi, Helsinki

Situated on the historic Bulevardi avenue in trendy Punavuori, this boutique hotel is 600 metres from Kamppi Metro Station. The breakfast buffet is exceptional with amazing baked goods from the nearby historic cafe Eckberg. The breakfast buffet is quite diverse and appeals to both American and European tastes. It was so nice to be able to try the local fishes like herring and salmon as well. I am lactose intolerant, so it was also nice that everything is labeled for lactose or gluten. The entire breakfast experience was exceptional down to the details like drinking out of ittala coffee cups. I enjoyed the experience so much I purchased the same cups from ittala to remember my experience at the hotel. I read an article by a local who described the coffee in Finland as "dishwater" so it was so nice to have our own nespresso machine in the room with complimentary nespresso pods. I really LOVED that in addition to the excellent normal gym equipment, there was a yoga room where I could practice yoga and barre (exhale). They also had the room set up for aerial yoga. The sauna and steam room were very nice as well. I appreciated being provided robes and slippers so that I could comfortably go from my hotel room to the sauna. The design of every room and common areas was really impressive. I also really appreciated that the hotel put events happening in the area on their instagram account. They happened to advertise a very cool retro vintage fair that I did in fact attend and walked away with some nice vintage souveniers. Everyone at the hotel spoke English very well. The location of the hotel was also very good and was within walking distance of the major sights or a short tram ride away. We also forgot to bring an adapter, but they were able to loan us one during our stay. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I definitely would return. The hotel is also very convenient to the tram 3 and 6, which you can take to and from the train station so getting from the airport to the hotel was so easy and very inexpensive. You can take the train from inside Helsinki airport.

Hotel Haven 5 stars

Hotel in Kaartinkaupunki, Helsinki

Overlooking Helsinki Harbour, this elegant hotel is just around the corner from the Esplanadi shopping streets. The rooms were really nicely appointed and the Byredo cosmetics were a nice touch. Location was absolutely great, closecto the harbour and with lots of good eating places nearby. The hotel bar was well stocked, especially on whiskeys and rums, and the 1944 Mai Tai was absolutely amazing.

Nordic Daughter of the Baltic

Scratch beneath the small-town surface of Helsinki and you will find a cosmopolitan metropolis buzzing with a lively attitude and plenty of excitement. The relatively short-lived summer offers the best chance to appreciate the outdoors and sit on one of the popular café terraces, or even hit the Hietaniemi Beach, all of which can be enjoyed during the 20 hours of daylight.

Strolling around the streets of Helsinki will reveal an Empire-style of architecture, comparable to St. Petersburg. The greatest example of this is the green-domed Lutheran Cathedral which rises proudly out of the centre of Senate Square. From here the main shopping street of Aleksanterinkatu, affectionately known as Aleksi, runs towards Mannerheimintie and contains the largest department store in Scandinavia, called Stockmann. The up-market boulevard of Esplanadi runs alongside and is packed with exclusive boutiques.

Lovers of Nordic design will be thrilled by the Design Museum and the Ateneum Art Museum. Nature is in abundance on the beautiful archipelago which lies along the coast. A must-see is the Baltic fortress of Suomenlinna, where you just might forget you’re in a big city.

Whether you head to a sauna or amusement park when you disembark from Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport, with over 65 hotels, apartments and hostels, Booking.com has the perfect place for your Scandinavian stay.
