Scratch beneath the small-town surface of Helsinki and you will find a cosmopolitan metropolis buzzing with a lively attitude and plenty of excitement. The relatively short-lived summer offers the best chance to appreciate the outdoors and sit on one of the popular café terraces, or even hit the Hietaniemi Beach, all of which can be enjoyed during the 20 hours of daylight.
Strolling around the streets of Helsinki will reveal an Empire-style of architecture, comparable to St. Petersburg. The greatest example of this is the green-domed Lutheran Cathedral which rises proudly out of the centre of Senate Square.
From here the main shopping street of Aleksanterinkatu, affectionately known as Aleksi, runs towards Mannerheimintie and contains the largest department store in Scandinavia, called Stockmann. The up-market boulevard of Esplanadi runs alongside and is packed with exclusive boutiques.

Helsinki was my earlier home city before I moved abroad.
Helsinki was my earlier home city before I moved abroad. It is fantastic, especially during the summertime with many cultural and outdoor activities, seaside walks, cafes, museums, churches, swimming, concerts - you name it! I highly recommend you explore Helsinki but you need to prepare a good budget for your stay.

Could not fault this city, very much alive with a great range of shops/shopping centres. A huge range of cafes/restaurants. City centre devoid of high rise buildings, unlike many other cities. Historical buildings in tact and well maintained. Public transport is superb and the tourist hop on/hop off bus covers all the main tourist locations.

Wonderful buildings (art deco) and architecture - we wandered the streets taking pictures. Walked down near the foreshore, which also has lots of running tracks and plenty of cafes/restaurants and is pleasant to do. Markets near the ferries to the islands for day trips are interesting. We did do a day trip to the island fortress and then at the end of our stay caught the ferry to Tallinn for our next adventure, staying there for 5 nights. It is a 2 1/2 hour trip to Tallinn and some people do it as a day trip. Helsinki is a very easy city to get around and has a great tram system. Clean and safe it was an enjoyable week exploring museums, churches, parks. Old town has main shopping centre with lots of high end stores if that is your thing to do. Most people speak English so language is not an issue. It is an expensive city for food and dinning out, so factor that into your budget.

The harbour with the sky wheel and flying cinema experience are worth the visit to that part of town. Unfortunately we didn't get to but if you get the chance i would have got the ferry over to Tallin for the day. Plenty to do for sight seeing. We had young kids who done alot of walking and were very tired at the end of each day but they liked it.

Helsinki is a charming and dynamic city that offers a rich tapestry of experiences for its visitors. With its blend of historical charm and natural beauty, it provides a memorable travel experience. I recommend Helsinki to anyone looking to explore a city that beautifully balances tradition and contemporary living.
the location of the hotel is in the very heart of Helsinki, near Irish Pub, with no particular noise and problem to sleep, without that. And you are on a very short distance to everything in the city center, shopping molls, coffees, restaurants, sightseeing, etc. It is really the best location for the hotel cost-wise.
Just two metro stops away from the city center and airport bus stop right outside the hotel was a huge plus point. Sauna and spa in the hotel gave us easy access to the Finnish experience. The hotel had everything one can ask for !
