Wanted simple and low-key, and that’s what I found. The dorm-style accommodation is my preference because the people staying are of similar persuasion: desiring simple, clean, comfortable, and casual space, with no formality or set schedules. Much like university dorm life: walking the hall in pajamas, going to breakfast in slippers. The showers and toilets were kept immaculate. Laundry, packed lunches, notices, were punctually delivered. I was on first-name hello with the staff from check-in to check-out. It was pleasant to sit in the cafeteria and chat with local working people: farmers, fishermen, construction workers, and get the skinny on day-to-day life. Lookout Lodge is adjacent the only service station in town and the only ATM in town: a supper plus. And, Rose’s Cafe.”, also adjacent, is a very pleasant space for morning coffee and cake.

We were upgraded immediately without any prior notice. Manager and all the staff at Malvina & restaurant are top notch! Beyond friendly and go out of their way to make sure to attend to customer. Wifi is a bit slow but that is expected being so remote in this world. Would stay again without question.

Chris and Julio are the best hosts we ever met! The house is very well maintained and the rooms are very nice and the bed is very comfortable. Everything provided is of high quality. Breakfast is super good and Julio’s special scrambled eggs is highly recommended! We can’t thank them enough for their hospitality and help in all ways! We will definitely recommend them to our friends!

Gonzalo was fabulous! He was so fun and interesting and really worked to ensure I learned about local culture and he gave me many wonderful experiences! He also gave me several local tours when he had some free time, though he does have a full-time job. When he was busy, he booked tours with other people when I asked, so I was never bored. He's also bilingual, English-Spanish. I actually met another person who stayed with Gonzalo and so I was confident going in because she sung his praises. I wasn't disappointed.

Stanley is a weathered blue-collar outpost town on a desolate island teaming with marine wildlife. It’s not a place for ‘culture’ seekers, antique shoppers, or fine dining connoisseurs. An hour’s walk outside Stanley and it’s a place of vast horizons, intense solitude, and penetrating silence. The wild and windswept coast, and ubiquitous boglands/peatlands are reminiscent of the UK, Netherlands, and other Northern Europe lands. For an American, it is otherworldly. The closest similar geography is alpine tundra. The town has a handful of quaint cafes and pubs for socializing after a day-long excursion . . . that doesn’t necessarily need transport. There is a lot of countryside (like Two Sisters mtn) and coast (like Gypsy Cove) to be visited on foot or by bicycle. The museum is small but well done, esp. on sailing history. Natural history is very cursory. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, Stanley is the only town of note for basing distant excursions. Bike packing would be an awesome alternative. I was puzzled why there was not an equestrian outing business, as that form of tramping would be quite exhilarating and able to cover a lot of camp land in a day’s outing; even overnighting w/pack horses or mules.
