Nice historical town at the river Yonne and Canal de Nivernais. Old city center much bigger than expected. We were positively surprised that obviously the city council seems to be interested to keep pedestrian places clean - which is not always the standard in France in cities of this size. Auxerre the capital of Yonne department and fourth largest Burgundian city lying on the banks of river Yonne 150 km South West Paris and 120 km North West Dijon. Auxerre was a flourishing Gallo-Roman centre named Autissiodorum in the first century AD and in the third century became episcopal chair, bishopric the provincial capital of the Roman Empire, receiving a cathedral in the fifth when the city walls were built by the feudal lords/counts of Burgundy. Renowned for vine cultivation and production of fine Burgundian wines including Chablis, in 1995 Auxerre was named Town of Art and History indeed evident in this medieval city with its myriad of half-timbered buildings enshrouded with French Renaissances residences.
