Cherbourg is dominated by a huge harbour where your ferry comes in. The town itself is long from east to west, spreading out from the harbour. From north to south it is much smaller. The harbour area and the promenades are worth walking around and the central area at the Place Charles de Gaulle is the best area to relax in. It's also the ideal town from which to see other nearby attractions, such as a D-Day beach, the Bayeux Tapestry and Mont-St-Michel, all of which I visited. One word of warning - the French railway service isn't the best. The trains are subjected to many cancellations and delays and the ticket machines in the stations frequently refuse to give you a ticket! Railway problems aside, the town of Cherbourg and other parts of Normandy are worth a holiday and I'm so glad I went.Guest review byCLIVEUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The Parc du Marais is well worth a visit as are the West Coast resorts on the peninsula. Best choice of restaurants and a pretty town to explore is Barfleur but there are good, informal, brasseries and restaurants all around. If you wish to go to Isle de Tatihou, pre-book. It was excellent with plenty to keep us busy for 3 days. We visited Cite de la Mer, enjoyed the general ambiance of Cherbourg, and finished our stay with a half day tour to La Hague area driven by the delightful and fun Agnes of Libellule Evasion. We only encountered helpful, polite locals and ate delicious local dishes and a few glasses of French wine. I love visiting this town.
I love visiting this town. Walks around the town centre for markets shops etc. Then a short trip oiyt past the Naval bas to the beach and the long coastal walks. I love the history, the old forts the magnificent Norman ability to build with stone. A drive to Barfleur for lunch of musseld and chips was another bonus. A lovely fishing port town off the beaten way with a choice of eateries all good. Exploring the small restaurants in te smaller villages and town is always rewarding . Remember the French rise early and lunch ends at 2 p.m. Skip breakfast and enjoy a leisurly early lunch instead!Guest review byAnonymousIreland - 8.0
We visited Cherbourg over Easter.
We visited Cherbourg over Easter. The town was buzzing on Easter Saturday with the food market and people out having drinks...very nice. Unfortunately in the evening there seemed to be a lack of restaurants open with the exception of a few high end places. We ate in the casino & also at our hotel, the Mecure. It's a nice place and a good location to see any D Day beaches/museums. You will need a car.Guest review byLara - 8.0

A really interesting town, great art gallery, and lots of places to visit around the town. It would have been good to stay longer but the weather was pretty bad so two nights were enough. The extensive road works around the harbour totally confused our satnav and the temporary one way systems were pretty difficult to negotiate. It was and there was no problem for us to book in sooner than expected. Our bicycles were well looked after by wheeling them through the lobby and into the secure carpark behind the accommodation. Everything was exceptionally clean. We did not use the little kitchenette as the aparthotel was situated conveniently to several eating places.
