Gateway to the Loire Valley
Easygoing and green, Nantes is the gateway to the Loire Valley. On a delta between the Loire, Erdre and Sèvre rivers, this once important port is now an innovation pioneer.
A former shipyard, the Île de Nantes in the Loire now has bars, clubs and restaurants. However, its most intriguing feature is the Machines of the Isle of Nantes, a collection of weird and wonderful mechanical sculptures – you can even take a ride on the elephant.
Across the river is the moat-surrounded Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne, a fortified castle and former home of Breton Dukes. A few streets away is Nantes Cathedral, whose façade is reminiscent of the one in Reims. Place du Bouffay in the historic city center is home to many restaurants and bars, while the 19th-century shopping center Passage Pommeraye has a range of stores over 3 levels. For a taste of daily life head to Talensac market.
Other Nantes attractions are the Japanese Garden at Île de Versailles in the Erdre, the former shipowners’ houses at Île Feydeau, and the Jules Verne Museum, celebrating the city’s most famous son.
Don’t head to Nantes Airport from your Booking.com hotel, apartment or B&B without having tried the local speciality – crêpes. Delicieux!

We had 3 nights here which felt just right. We did a walking tour on day 1 and the following day we visited Les Machines de I’ll. On our final day we walked around le Jardin des Plantes. We had lots of good food and drink along the way and would definitely recommend Chez Maman for good food and quirky decor. Beautiful city with so much to do. Walking distance from one attraction to another but good tram links. Reasonable prices for food and drink and every to everything. Would recommend the Nantes Pass. I got a 3 day for €47 and used it to the value of €122 so great savings. It includes the Airport shuttle bus at €10 each way, a great service. Nothing much to do. Very boring. I’m not able to walk much. Bus fares are expensive. I ate at Paul’s, pret, mercure hotel and at the hostel. It isn’t easy to get around when you can’t walk. There are no great activities for travellers like me.Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0

The chateau of the Duke of Burgundy is spectacular, and the museum inside was very interesting. The machines de l'ile are worth a visit - the best children's carousel I have ever seen, and the grand elephant was much more impressive in the "flesh" than I expected. The parks and gardens were great. I loved the variety of beautiful trees. Easy to access the historical places. Excellent that transport was free on the weekend. Nantes is a very welcoming city. It’s a small city, but there are so many amazing destinations to discover here. Transportation between destinations is very convenient, and the people are extremely friendly.
