FAQs about hotels in Saint Malo

Walled Gateway to France

One of the major seaports connecting France and England, Saint Malo is Brittany’s most visited town and a tourist destination in its own right.

The Old Town overlooks the English Channel and is completely surrounded by restored walls. You get a great view of them if you arrive on the ferries from England to St Malo (either direct or by the Channel Islands). Once an island, this citadel now shelters behind it the hundreds of sailing boats bobbing in the modern harbor.

Within the Old Town are bars and restaurants serving oysters from nearby Cancale, and many of the St Malo hotels. The most notable sights are the cathedral with its colorful, stained-glass window, and the castle - site of the town's museum.

The beaches are sandy, though the water is somewhat bracing. A causeway leads to Grand Bé, a rocky island housing the tomb of Chateaubriand, its most famous son. To the south is the 14th-century Solidor Tower, a remarkable collection of artifacts from voyages around Cape Horn. Further inland is Labyrinthe du Corsaire, a huge maze that will keep kids busy for hours.

In the Rance River, connecting the sea to Dinan, is the world’s first tidal power station. The road over it leads to Dinard Airport, the closest to Saint-Malo.

There are terrific sandy beaches here, so remember to check the tide information before you come. After the tide goes out, you will see hundreds of meters of sandy beach where you can sunbathe or swim. At high tide, you'll see waves hitting the shore and lots of people waiting for the waves to splash in to take pictures. The hotels here open right next to the beach, perfect for a vacation!

Saint-Malo is a buzzing walled city, full of history and interest. It can get very busy in high season and is tricky at times to get around because of the crowds. Be aware of the people around you, as you would in any busy town: many of the streets are narrow and you should keep a tight watch on your wallet, phone etc. The narrowness of the streets also makes it a challenge to drive within the walls, and to find parking spaces, you should arrive early. There are plenty of restaurants but it’s advisable to book if you can in order to avoid being disappointed. We really liked La Brasserie Chateaubriand in Place Chateaubriand: it’s very atmospheric inside with a great menu, lovely staff and a large outside area if the weather is good. The sandy beach outside the ramparts is a jewel at low tide, with rock pools for children to explore, and there is a seawater pool with an incredible diving board that’s been there for years and provides hours of fun for visitors.

Very pretty old town /walled city.

Very pretty old town /walled city. Lovely too walk the ramparts ~amazing views ! But middle of August it was HEAVING with tourists which made it difficult to get around or find spaces in bars etc. A good boat trip around the Bay was worthwhile. Parking a huge issue everywhere . Enjoyed our location, at Tour Solidor much quiter and less of a tourist attraction, The Marina was also a pleasnt place to sit and watch the world go by!

Really liked this place but in August it was very busy during the day, however loads of places to eat and the beaches are superb. Parking was a problem as we had to wait for spaces to become available, but we just left the car for a few days once parked. Good place to use as a base as well, we went to Honfleur (excellent) Dinan (superb), Dinant & Mont Saint-Michel (far too busy so will go out of season next time) and some of the wartime sites on the trip home. Love this part of France though.

The hotel is well located and the staff are all very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is all freshly prepared and is one of the best we have had. Yes the rooms are a little small and the lift is one person only but the hotel offers super value for money especially with the available parking spaces so we will definitely return
