Clearwell is a quiet village and the local amenities are just a short drive from Clearwell. Unfortunately Clearwell Castle is not open to the publikc but you can drive up to take a quick picture. The local pubs where closed due to COVID so do your researech for places to drink and eat. Puzzlewood was an unexpected surprise and is good for families, friends & couples. Shooting with DBC Leisure is a must - the hosts are great instructors.
Delightful hotel, wish we could have stopped longer. Little touches like blankets for sitting outside, umbrellas for walking back to the rooms, board games to play were very thoughtful. Lots to see around the area. We couldn’t eat in the hotel as it was fully booked but ate at the pub next door which was very good.
Some attractions such as Puzzle Wood and Clearwell Caves are within easy walking distance but when you get near them they are all on a main road without a footpath. We walked to Puzzle Wood with four children and decided not to go in by the main entrance as it involved a stretch of busy road. This was not appreciated by staff, so recommendation is to drive everywhere!
Very small, idyllic English countryside town. Close to lots of hiking trails in the Forest of Dean. Visited both Raglan Castle and Goodrich Castle for a little history, the grounds and sites were attractive. Walks are around the area are great but give the Forest of Dean Sculpture trail a miss, as the sculptures are run down and underwhelming. Puzzlewood very close to Clearwell, and a great day out for kids and kids at heart, to get lost in the Forest of Dean, and meet some farm animals. Eat at the Butchers Arm, for friendly staff and great food. With only a few options to eat in Clearwell itself, we did go into Monmouth for more food options which are only a 15min drive.
We attended a wedding at nearby Clearwell Castle and stayed a short walk away at The Tudor Farmhouse Hotel. Pity we were only there for a couple of days as we would have loved to have explored the area mor.
We wanted a good hotel in the Forest of Dean area and Clearwell contained that hotel. There are no other amenities in Clearwell village, but it is close to other towns and villages with stuff. Also very close to the heart of the forest and not far from the Welsh border, which has stunning scenery. There is a lot to do for all ages a short car ride away.
The location for a wedding at the castle is great. Was really nice to have breakfast at the castle with our wedding party too. The Butchers Arms pub across the road was recommended by the hotel and was lovely. Food and service there was amazing. Our room had a huge comfortable bed and lovely walk in rainfall shower. The room service staff were lovely.
