Oban is a city built around a late 18th-century distillery that produces one of the finest single malt whiskeys in Scotland. This normally peaceful town is invaded during summer when tourists use it as a base to visit the Inner Hebrides islands such as Mull, Lismore and Coll, supporting its status as the Gateway to the Isles.
The horseshoe-shaped Oban Bay is sheltered by Kerrera Island with its spectacular Gylen Castle. Award-winning seafood restaurants and lively pubs line George Street and the waterfront of Corran Esplanade adjacent to the harbour.
Take a short walk up the hill to McCaig’s Tower, a structure based on the Roman Colosseum, for the finest views of Oban’s centre and the outer islands. When you get back down to sea level, stroll into and stumble out of the Oban whiskey distillery after sampling the local version of the 'water of life'.
Admire the coastal scenery as you travel a bit out of town to the 7th-century ruins of Dunollie Castle, home of the Clan MacDougall. The Firth of Lorn gives visitors a fanatstic opportunity to try some sea kayaking.
As the capital of North Argyll, Oban has a great selection of hotels, guest houses and B&Bs available on Booking.com.

Oban is hosting the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race - the first time a stopover has been made in Scotland in the event's 27-year history. The town is alive with colour, happy racing crews, their families and friends and visitors from all over the world. There have been festivals, exhibitions, food and drink experiences and live music; and a fantastic prizegiving in the famous Corran Halls. Get yourselves along and check the place out before the fleet leaves for Portsmouth on Sunday 21st. Quite magical.

Oban is a lovely town on the ferry and train routes out to the island of Mull. Can be windy but wonderful when the sun is out. Good restaurants with lots of choice. Nice Art shop and a Waterstones plus many high class highland souvenir shops.

Very busy. A few years since I was last here. Disappointed with quality of bars/restaurants. Unfortunately the town looks tired and is becoming a little dad. That is disappointing because it has so much potential and there are obviously people who care.

A lovely town.
A lovely town. Such a pity we didn’t have good weather or we would have tried the ferry. Good choice of restaurants and pubs. A relaxed place to wander around.
The whisky distillery is full of interesting facts and although we didn’t do the tour looked popular.
Our best meal was at the Olive and Garden, next to Wetherspoons. Beautiful meal and great service. No need to book either.
Oban is not huge so it’s lovely just to wander around admiring the lovely views.

Oban is a much busier place than we expected. Lots of places to eat etc. The ferry to Mull and other isles. Easy access. We stayed on the outskirts of the main town which was quite with great views of the coast.

Oban is a pleasant lively seaside town with plenty of shops, places to eat and drink, its own distillery, and a whisky shop stocking every whisky you have ever heard of and quite a few you haven't. It has a lively ferry port from which you can catch trips to many of the western isles, as well as organised day trips to Mull, Iona, Staffa or and , although in summer you may have to travel up the coast for some crossings. There are also coach excursions available to Glenco and the highlands, tours to Loch Lomaond and other lochs, ans tours to nearby distilleries. Arriving in Oban from either an hebridean island or from the mountainous hinterland you feel as if you emerged back from the jungle as the town is thriving and busy. You can also get there by train although these are not very frequent. Once you arrive the attractions are all within a short walk - on our visit we saw a pipe band playing in the centre of town, and for Sunday the Cathedral was only a short walk. The beach was also popular with swimmers and clean (although not yet warm enough early June for me to go in). A most pleasant seaside town to visit for a few days.
We travelled by train to Oban so picked the property because of its closeness to the railway station. We stayed in the apartments (separated from the hotel only by a few metres) and location proved to be excellent! It is also only one street back from high street and next to an excellent pub. Apartment was roomy, light and on first floor. Would certainly recommend to friends.
We were down by another hotel. Booking cancelled 30 minutes before we arrived in Oban.
This hotel was available at short notice. We got a warm welcome at reception, the room was warm, clean and comfortable.
This was at a great location in the centre of town.
It’s an old building with character. The lift is old fashioned. We will certainly go back. Great value for money.
A smart boutique hotel overlooking the harbour entrance to Oban and a 10 minute walk to the town centre. Excellent modern decor with vintage touches. Guest focused with lovely touch in having an honesty box for the bar. Member of staff Rachel was so welcoming and made our stay so memorable.
I cannot fault this hotel it was fantastic in every respect. The welcome was great, the room was perfect and it's in a superb location loverlooking the loch and close to Oban. Our ferry to Mull had been cancelled and it was exactly what we needed and great value for money. A brilliant stay!
