Skala Eresos (Eresos proper is in the hinterland) is a very pleasant little town on the sea.
It has a 2km long sandy beach, crystal clear water, but since people are giving Lesbos a wide berth this summer, it was nearly empty.
Which is a pity for this town, because there has never been any trouble there and they are too far away from the Turkish coast anyway (which is on the opposite side of Lesbos) to even have seen a single refugee last year.
Everybody was friendly, we even found an excellent restaurant (Yannis & Gabi in the second row, a little hidden) - which is not self-evident in every Greek resorts, where food can be pretty horrible at times in our experience. Great hosts and very dedicated cooking with specials every day.
We used the picturesque row of beachfront restaurants on stilts hanging over the beach to have sundowners or to listen to the surf of the sea later in the evening.
Skala Eresos has only small hotels, pensions and private rooms, no big hotel complex - we like that. Skala Eresos is perfect for people who like a relaxed vacation, don't insist on luxurious abodes.
The only downside is the fact that the taxi prices from Mytilene airport are prohibitive, so renting a car to go there makes more sense. Public transport to Skala Eresos is hardly existent. Why they haven't installed a shuttle van to pick up people from the airport is hard to understand.
