Fell in love with the whole island.. one side of the island, facing Port Magee, is less interesting than the other side, where our b and b was (Horizon Lodge) but was no less interesting ... the other side faces right out to sea (next stop USA) . There are many attractions, and some of the houses built many, many years ago, are really nice. There's a historical mansion worth a visit and the grounds of same and a 5km walk, through some tropical gardens to the headland, where there is a lighthouse (again worth a visit - euro 7 pp ) and the GIANT boulders on the beach nearby the lighthouse, made me gasp in amazement as it's a landscape I have never seen before. I would greatly recommend a visit to the island and to stay at least 2 days exploring. Height of Summer for visit NO... too many tourists ... maybe in the quieter seasons instead.
A beautiful island, well worth the travel around the Ring Of Kerry and the short ferry to get there. A real get it away from it all location. Walk, cycle, hike and enjoys the fabulous views from the apartment, from Geokuan Mountain (can drive to top car park), the Lighthouse etc. There are a few welcoming pubs and restaurant/coffee shops and a short trip to the mainland if you want more. Also a great location if you are thinking of taking the boat trip to Skellig Michael, visiting the Skellig Chocolate Factory etc.
This was the last place from the inshore shipping forecast that my wife and I had to visit. It was a fabulous sunny evening, we had champagne next to the lifeboat station as they practiced in the bay. I suspect on a grey February day it would be a different place........ The lighthouse is worth a trip to see and the there is a large observation "bunker" with some information boards nearby.
There is a lot to see on the Island! A mountain top you can drive up to and cliffs that are incredible! A view at sunset from the mountain top of the Dingle Peninsula is gorgeous. Close to the cute town of Portmagee where we had dinner along the seaside, and the boats to Skellig Michael for the tour the next day.
If this island isn't on your bucket list - add it. Amazing place with lots to see and do. Ideal for a quiet getaway or for some sight-seeing. I highly recommend climbing Geokaun Mountain as the view from there is spectacular. Don't worry, if you are unable to climb, you can drive to the very top too. Also recommend visiting Portmagee and getting the boat out to the Skelligs if you can! If the boat is unavailable, make your way to the Kerry Cliffs where you will be spoiled with amazing views of the surrounding areas and the Skelligs, Puffin Island and the Great Blasket.
So much to see and do. All new things, very very picturesque. Really enjoyed the lighthouse museum, the tetraquad imprint, the slate mine, the boating trip with Liz and Kerry Aqua , Bray Head and so much more.
Valentia Island
The cottage was exceptionally clean and the host, Frances, was very welcoming. The location was great, a short walk or drive to Portmagee where there were a couple of shops and pubs with great food. The proximity to Kerry Cliffs and to the drive to Ballinskellig was beautiful. The outdoor space was nice, we sat out for a meal and coffee and also watched the full moon rise over the opposite hill.
Valentia Island
Stunning setting to escape from it all, no TV, no WiFi. This is a place to come switch off and gives a taste of old Ireland life. Comfy stay for 2, the stove was prepped on arrival. As it's a few kilometres from Knightstown and many food amenities were unavailable due to Covid, it's great to have a full kitchen to cook what you need. Would definitely return.
