It was really close to the bus stop and Takegawara Onsen. We loved the Beppu cold noodles restaurant called "Rokusei", which again was close to the hostel. The area around the hostel had a retro atmosphere, but the hostel itself was stylishly built. The prices were reasonable.

Beppu as an onsen town is great. Lots of amenities can be reached by local buses. Unfortunately foreign tourist have discovered the place so everywhere is crowded unless you go to some remote onsen.
As for the hotel, room, the food and the services were all great. I did not like the lay out of the building. All areas of the building were not barrier free. There are actually several levels to the building and wing 3 is separated from wing 1 and 2 by stairs. The front desk was in wing 1 (extreme left as viewed from the sea.) The building is too long so no wi-fi service in my wing 3 or any place else except the lobby. I tried to extend my stay requiring Airline reservation change, But without wi-fi it was very difficult to reach ANA.
*****MY LAST SIPER COMPLAIN IS THE PHONE SERVICE: I have a lost my passport. I want to relay this information to the Hotel staff right away. THE AI answering machine gave me the creeps. I HATE IT. I hated it when I made the reservation through you and I hate it now!!!!!!!
**By the way I don't like the fact that you have no phone number listed on your page!!!

Beppu is a great place to visit for a day or two where you will be fully occupied. The city itself is really interesting with many onsen to visit. Lively bars and restaurants are also available but not to the same level as the big cities like Tokyo and Kyoto as part of a tour of Japan. I thoroughly recommend visiting the city. We travelled from Osaka on an overnight ferry which was really good fun and took the train from Beppu with great ease.

A pleasant city to spend 1-2 nights.
A pleasant city to spend 1-2 nights. However, go only if you are into onsen (hot spring bath). Otherwise, there is really nothing much else to do. If you are the type who do not like public baths, opt for a ryokan with private bath. If your budget permits, opt for the kaiseki meal (set meal) served by the ryokan.
The Beppu Jigoku (Beppu Hells) is too commercialised for my liking. I'd recommend you start with Umi Jigoku and pick 1 or 2 more you like it. All of the "hells" are within walking distance from Umi Jigoku. Otherwise, you can skip the rest and spend more time walking and exploring Kannawa area (look out for Route 218).
The Jigoku Mushi (steamed meal) is not worth the money. You'd be better off patronising a local yakiniku joint - Oita prefecture is famous for its beef, chicken and mushroom; all of these taste great when grilled over charcoal.

Old, tired, mold in bathrooms, no English speaking staff, over priced, breakfast almost all Japanese food and quality wasn’t very good. Don’t stay at this place unless you pay approximately $50/night.

Beppu has a great vibe, especially the area around Beppu Station and the area near the "hells". The sight of water vapour rising between all the buildings is truly something. But aside from the hells and the hot springs there is not that much more to do in the city itself. So 2-3 days should definetely be enough for people who have a limited amount of time in Japan. The city of Yufu one hour busride from Beppu and certainly worth a visit. There are a couple of other great places in Oita Prefecture worth visiting but those are a little bit hard to access without a car.

Beppu is one of the best cities I visited, it is a city is in the middle of sea and mountain. There is a lot of Onsen where you can be easy to find around the city, Beppu is called " City of Onsen".
You can relax and release any daily tired at the onsen bath (especially if you bath onsen pool outside)
Furthermore, you can go to viewpoint to see the Beppu city and mountain view.
It is a good memory to visit there.
The staff was very friendly but most of them only know Japanese. There was a private onsen in our room and also one onsen half outside which could be used in private. The third big onsen was public.
The room was very spacious and clean with a beautiful traditional Japanese look. You also get Yukatas you can wear for breakfast or when you go to the onsen.
The breakfast was very traditional Japanese (rice, miso soup, fish).
Close to all tourist spots of Beppu (15 minute walk to Beppu Hells, the observatory deck, Oita fragrance museum, …)!
Lovely property only a minute's walk away from Beppu train station. Run by a friendly Japanese lady who seems to have been running it for several decades. Just as cosy as it looks in the pictures with the reception room full of old knick knacks. There's also a large and incredibly relaxing onsen bath available for all residents to use which I'd highly recommend. Definitely stay here if you come to Beppu!
Booked including dinner because there aren't many restaurants near by. We did not expect to be served a 9 course Kaiseki meal. It was delicious and presented beautifully.
The rooms were spacious and very clean, with private Onsen bath on the balcony. Can highly recommend this beautiful Ryokan for a stay in Beppu.
Excellent location just outside Beppu station. Very friendly staff. Welcome drinks, buffet breakfast and in-house onsen. What more can you ask?? Definitely the best hotel on our trip in Japan.
