Everyone in the world should go to the Peace Museum. It's such an emotional and raw journey that lets people experience exactly what happened on that fateful day with the last words of those who perished and haunting stories of humanistic survival after a major nuclear disaster. There are plenty of things to go see aside from the bomb/memorials (though you should definitely go see them), but the most important thing is to just soak in the culture - Hiroshima isn't as big of a tourist destination as Osaka/Tokyo and you can find a lot more local cuisine/customs/attractions that aren't as "touristy" Getting around is easy with public transport, but we did find ourselves walking a lot. We wouldn't avoid anything, and we loved the Italian restaurant along the peace park!
It's a modern city with mainly a historical significance but not that much to see/do in the city itself. There is the museum, a couple of remaining buildings, a city park and the castle. If you go out of town, by train within a 30' distance and a 10' boat, there is the Miyajima island with a shrine and deers walking free around you (like Nara). In short, if it's out of your route maybe it's not worthy to deviate, otherwise a weekend stop is enough. If you are into history, a volunteer guide told me that Hiroshima's gov is quite conservative and they don' depict much of the shocking truth of the bombing, while in Nagasaki they do. So, maybe Nagasaki is a better destination from historical visit-point of view.
Hiroshima is not really a city, it is a big country town that has morphed into a city. The downtown area is compact and essentially surrounds the main centre street Hondori. The nightlife area is centred around 2 main streets at the end of Hondori. It is a pleasant, friendly place that people visit for obvious reasons. A 2-3 day trip would most likely allow you to explore the city Miyajima - the UNESCO WHS island around 30 min train journey from the main station. There are a couple of small art museums on the centre as well as the Peace Park Museums. It is a very easy city to cycle around - although in truth you could walk most of it.
Hiroshima sadly was the location for the use of the first atomic bomb so to see the Atomic Bomb Dome which was one of the only buildings to survive in any condition near to the hypocentre of the blast was amazing and to find the spot of the actual hypocentre of the blast was incredibly thought provoking and for the poor people who were vapourised instantaneously when simply going about their daily business at 08:15 on the 8th August 1945 is quite terrible, irrespective of your thoughts for or against. The layout of the museum in Peace Park was well organised and through pictures and artifacts really brings home the effect the bomb had on the people in Hiroshima on that day and those that survived. Copies of the official documents from the British and US governments at the time giving the go ahead for the dropping of the bomb is also very interesting along with the process of the approval for the creation the Manhattan Project which led to the development of the bomb and the huge costs involved. In the grounds of the castle you can also see trees that are still growing after they survived the blast. Nature always finds a way. Overall, a great, very sad, emotional and thought provoking experience.
Hiroshima is a great place, clean, modern and ancient at the same time, with some of the kindest people I've ever met. Truly a place dedicated to peace, forgiveness and resilience. A must-go place for all people.
We love Hiroshima and have been there many times. Peace Park is lovely to stroll around and the Peace Memorial Museum is very moving. The world-heritage site at Miyajima is easy to get to. Lots of shopping and great places to eat and drink.
A very clean hotel in an excellent location. Love using the onsen that is on site. It has a new modern look. Yukatas were provided in the room along with slippers. All bathroom amenities were provided. The only downfall is the size of the room, but that is kind of expected here in Japan. The check in procedure was different this time, they had new self check in kiosks. It got a little confusing having passports and address outside Japan, but the staff helped. Will come back each time we stay in Hiroshima overnight.
The breakfast was very good. There were many different Hiroshima dishes available to try (I recommend the anago rice!). The decor was a little old but the room was fair. The communal bath was comfortable and relaxing. The location of the hotel was very convenient with good access to popular sightseeing spots (e.g Peace Park, A-bomb dome). The allocated car parking spaces were separate from the hotel but only a 4 min walk away. Would definitely stay there again.
This hotel was FANTASTIC! Everything you need is provided - toothbrush/paste, hair brush, sleeping attire, slippers & amenities. Our room had a wonderful view and was so clean and well maintained. The staff were all so helpful and knowledgeable. Perfect location and easy to get around. Thank you for a fantastic stay! If we are ever back in Hiroshima, we will be staying at Rihga Royal again.
Chisun Hotel is in a very convenient location, on a main street within walking distance of Hiroshima railway station and the Atomic Bomb Dome. There are also lots of shopping streets nearby and you can take the streetcar from the station if you wish, or you can use it to go to the Atomic Bomb Dome and on to Miyajima for example. Hard to get lost if you're staying in this hotel.
Really close to Hiroshima station and tram. It is also a short walk from main things. There is a conbini right next to the hotel. Easy self check out and check in with computers in the lobby. Free amenities out in the lobby. They even let us drop off our luggage when we arrived before check in. Everything was great!
Very well located, short walk distance from Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, with a tram stop in front of the hotel. It is a simple hotel with no luxury but really clean and comfortable. Did almost everything walking around, using tram just to arrive and depart. Check in and Check out are straightforward.
Hotel extremely well located for The Peace Memorial Museum and surrounding area. Tram stop immediately outside the hotel and access to all public transport and Hiroshima station is easy. Accommodation is as exactly as described.
Conveniently located near Hiroshima station. Typical Japanese hotel. Courteous, we’ll trained staff. Decent buffet breakfast. No fluffy American style scrambled eggs. It’s the half cooked runny French-English style scrambled.
The hotel is located in central Hiroshima, which is accessible by the trams followed by a short walk. Very close to the main shopping districts and amazing restaurants. What’s more, the room was very spacious and comfortable.
Sitting right beside Hiroshima station, the hotel is very easy to access. The room was lovely, and the view superb. The staff were welcoming and very kind. Great place to stay when wanting to be close to the memorials!
The room was very large and very clean with complimentary water and comfortable pajamas. The hotel is very central to Hiroshima and only a short walk to Peace Park as well as an abundance of restaurants.
Very nice boutique hotel. The rooms have a great design and are comfortable and very clean. The hotel is located about midway between the Hiroshima train station and the peace memorial park.
The hotel is beautiful and incredibly convenient, located next to Hiroshima Station. Easy access to all public transit - bus, streetcar, and train.
The hotel is very close to the Hiroshima JR station as well as the memorial park. It was a very clean and nice room with a view!
Helpful staff, really comfy bed and great showering room. The common area was a nice place to relax too.
Beautiful seaview with good service. The room is good too. We are sure to come again
Get a corner room - with the jacuzzi bath and the view!
Breakfast was very good and the staff were lovely.
