A hidden gem in the Japan Alps. Not only is the view of the lake and mountains breathtaking, the people are so friendly, welcoming and helpful. A visit to the museums, castle, heritage house and shrines are recommended to discover the history of Suwa. The Clock Museum and Music Box Museum must not be missed. The foot onsen are very relaxing.
Suwa is good place for a weekend, or a onsen night and full day after a short stay in Nagano pref. I recommend to rent a bicycle for the day and visit the city while cycling. Cycling around the lake is easy and can surely be done within 2 hours. There are some onsen outside that can be enjoyed for free. Suwa people are super friendly and helpful.
We stayed 2 nights, using Suwa as a base to travel by hire car from Tokyo to Kyoto. We passed Mt Fuji enroute and found the roads easy to navigate and quiet by English standards. The hotel was a restful stopping place in this small town and we enjoyed a walk along the shore were people were bathing their feet in the free foot spas fed by the thermal waters. Day 2 we went to the Alps to see the 'snow monkeys' then back to Suwa along the Expressway. Day 3 we continued on to Kyoto following the Kiso valley. Definitely an amazing 3 day trip and a highlight of our stay in Japan.
Beautiful lake view, not too crowded during our stay. Location is quite central for visiting various attractions in Nagano prefecture. Also able to visit Mount Fuji and its lakes on day trips by car.
Quiet city with nice weather and surroundings. People are all kind and helpful. Lake Suwa and Tateishi Park are recommended places. You can also go to ski resort at Fujimi by train with just 20 minutes.
Our stay in Suwa was due to a family meeting. It´s a small city with a couple of temples. It was snowing when we arrived and the landscape was amazing. We visited Matsumoto castle from Suwa using JR pass. The castle is splendid.
